Superbowl XLV - the commercials

So Green Bay are the Super Bowl XLV champions and for once the football game was exciting and a great spectacle. But the really important question isn’t about football, it is far more profound:

What was the best commercial during Super Bowl XLV?

There were 76 or so commecials, and out of those I've listed 26 or so in the poll ( please vote in the poll below the videos). I've selected my personal top thirteen (note this will expand to 26!):

1 Volkswagen -- 2011 -- Darth Vader

This commercial simply has the ‘aww’ factor – it’s simple, cute and very effective. For me there wasn’t a better commercial out there; Volkswagen well done! It reminds me of the time when my father-in-law teased my children in a similar way!

2 Chevy Camaro -- 2011 -- Miss Evelyn

Another commercial that reaches our hearts; perhaps a little too complicated, and under-written in a way, but it definitely is worthy of a mention. NIce car, nice women and a very cutesy ending!

3 Coca-Cola -- 2011 -- Border

For me simplicity is always effective and at the end of the commercial you are in no doubt that this was a Coke commercial; it plays on both enmity and yet friendship and was very effective. This reminded me of the stories of soldiers playing soccer at Christmas in the middle of the trenches in World War I

4 Chevrolet – 2011 – Glee Promo

Love it or hate it, Glee does put on a show and this really does give a great glimpse into what the show is all about – it also shows the clever tie-in between a Chevrolet and a major show; great marketing.

5 Bud Light – 2011 – Dog Sitter

This is a great commercial showing the idiosyncrasies of man and yet portraying them as dogs – the dog at the BBQ epitomized what man is all about! Are we shallow or wot?

6 MINI USA – 2011 – Cram It in the Boot

A great innuendo filled commercial that brought back memories of college for me when we used to cram as many people as we could in phone boxes or minis! Perhaps went a little too far, but they got away with it!

7 Stella Artois – 2011 – Crying Jean

“That’s Adrian Brody isn’t it” I cried as I watched this commercial. Not a very subtle commercial, but with the star factor and the message it was very effective.

8 Bud Light – 2011 – Product Placement

Probably one of the most clever commercials making fun of the whole advertising industry and yet getting their product in the lime light! Funny and clever, and you definately end up knowing the product!

(Vote for this in the poll below)

9 Doritos – 2011- Pug Attack

This Crash The Super Bowl contest winner is one of the most loved. Bad acting, sill idea, very poor – BUT it’s got people talking about it, and at the end of the day that’s what marketing is all about.

(Vote for this in the poll below)

10 Brisk – 2011 – Eminem

This was one of the more artistic and clever commercial of all. The claymation was excellent, the music was Eminem class, and the message was obvious – it may not have quite got the message across about the product but it was very watchable.

11 VW Black Beetle

Not only was this a great and fun commercial, that compared 'beetles' to cars and showed a rally beetle zooming through the forest, but it was perhaps the most enticing of all commercials as it gave a glimpse of the new beetle shape!

12 Pepsi Max - First Date

While I didn't really get the link between first date and Pepsi Max, this was a pretty funny and effective commecial and yet again likened men to dogs - I sense a theme here!

13 Pepsi Max Love Hurts

Interesting commentary on how men really want time alone but cannot have it - funny commercial with a great twist at the end! Unexpected!

The stage used in the Detroit commercial is the same one Zero Mostel trod in the pre-Broadway trials of "Fiddler On The Roof", as well as many concerts and other performances. Strange matching football and Detroit. The Lions have not figured out how to make that work for many years. Ah, but cars. That they know. Kudos to Chrysler for putting a good idea together in the right way. David Russell
