The Bay City Rollers - Where are they now?
73Who were the Bay City Rollers?
The Bay City Rollers were a popular and successful Scottish pop band from the 70s. They were a band that found fame in the teeny-bopper era and were once called the ‘biggest group since the Beatles’. Their main line-up comprised of singer Les McKeown, guitarist Eric Faulkner and Stuart Wood, bassist Alan Longmuir and drummer Derek Longmuir.
With their fun tartan pop style, their over the top teeny-bop music and their general performances that were full of life, color and fun, they became a worldwide sensation and commanded a huge cult following.
They found success in the UK with hits in the early seventies. “Keep on Dancing” reached #9 in 1971; their main success in the UK was in the mid seventies though with several hit songs “Remember”, “Shang a Lang”, “Summerlove Sensation” and “All of me Loves All of you” all reaching the top ten during 1974 and 1975. Their song ‘Bye Bye Baby” reached #1 in 1975 and stayed their for 6 weeks selling over a million copies. Their follow up song “Give a Little Love” also hit #1.
The Bay City Rollers had success in the US with a number one hit “Saturday Night” in 1975 and a number one album “Bay City Roller” which topped the album charts on February 7, 2006 and followed this up with a #9 hit on the singles chart with “Money Honey”.
Their success was short-lived though, with the band’s popularity waning through the late seventies as the band lost several key members thanks to the pressure and to members pursuing solo careers. They continued to tour in the 80s and 90s with different band members and released a reunion album in Japan in 1985.
Like many of the successful bands during the 70s the band members ‘allegedly’ didn’t earn much in terms of royalties and six members of the band announced a lawsuit against their record company in hope of received millions of dollars of unpaid royalties. – this court case is still moving forward and there are counter claims from other members who were excluded from this case!
So where are the Bay City Rollers now?
Like many of the 70s bands, the Bay City Rollers have begun to tour again. They are currently touring the UK and will be visiting Canada towards the end of the year. The band have updated all their hits and continued to belt out their songs to an adoring crowd. Now billed as “Les McKeown’s Legendary Bay City Rollers” the band is comprised of:
- Si Mulvey: Bass Guitar and backing vocals
- Michael Koch: Lead Guitar (retired in June 2011)
- Alex Toff: Drummer
- Alex Southgate: Keyboards and backing vocals
- Les McKeown: Vocals
They have toured together for the last ten years and continue to wow their fans today!

I'm quite familiar with I Only Want to Be with You. But I'm not familiar with this band despite me being born in the 1970s and my parents playing current music as well as older music at the time. Hmm. Not sure why I don't know their music from the late seventies.
