How to get decent backlinks
85How to get decent back links after the Google algorithm change
One of the first things I learnt when I began to delve into the weird and wonderful world of SEO is the importance of backlinks – the second thing I learnt was that creating backlinks can be a highly tedious affair.
So I began to look into ways of buildings backlinks without having to do much work.
A note about the google algorithym change
Many SEO experts are scrambling to understand the changes that occurred to Google's Algorythm in February 2011 and how best to combat them. However, the changes will not change my strategy that much. I've always focused on quality content and quality links, and although I'll be more careful on the site where I place a link, and the content I add to this site, the overall strategy really doesn't change much. My traffic has gone down this week but I fully expect it to recover and hopefully actually benefit from the changes,
Using ‘Scraping’ to promote links.
This is more for bloggers than Hubpagers, but one thing I’ve found is that quite a few of my blog entries have been copied in their entirety (or scraped) – so rather than try and stop people from doing this and spending hours or days trying to force them to delete the content, I have found that if I can insert some links to my other pages, then I will at least get a benefit out of this copied content.
The one way to do this is to use a plugin designed by Yoast – it’s an RSS Footer plugin for wordpress – essentially install the plugin and add some links using this tool to your hubpages, blogs etc. Thus when someone ‘scrapes’ your content at least you’ll have some backlinks.
(It's ironic that this hub has actually been scraped! While I have filed a complaint, it is interesting to see that the scraper has included my links - so at least the scrape may be beneficial to me)
Forum / directory signature
Quite often I will be active in forums and directories even when I am not trying to promote a website – for example, today I did a lot of research trying to find out how to finish an installation of Windows 7 after encountering a ‘restart loop’ – I visited probably 50 websites and left relevant comments on each of them – where possible I include a link to a relevant site of mine. I do note that each of the links I place were relevant to the discussion – simply putting a link to XBOX Games in a Windows 7 forum isn’t going to get you much traffic and in many cases may well get you banned from the forum.
- How do I get backlinks to my websites?
Find out more ways to get backlinks to your websites on Webanswers.com
It is very important that you are an active member of the forums you post in - simply adding comments just to get backlinks is not acceptable and can often get a backlash to your site and indeed to Hubpages. The same goes for directories - simply spamming every directory with every hub is an overkill and probably will not help in SEO - the best thing to do is select some very good directories and then only post relevant and quality sites to these directories.
This is my newest place to post links – I have joined quite a few groups on Facebook that interest me. I visit these groups and participate – occasionally someone will ask a question about something I have already written a web page and I’ll provide a link to my content – as I am known in the group and constantly participate in the group then I do get quite a lot of traffic this way. It’s part of my normal day routine to visit these groups so I’m not spending that much additional time getting back-links.
As I mentioned above, it is important that you don't overdo this and don't simply post every hub to every group you can find. Become an active member on some groups and then only post quality hubs that are relevant to the group or the discussion.
Digg
The use of sites like Digg, reddit and other bookmarking sites is often a good way to get people to visit your site and also creates an instant backlink - it is important that you are active on these sites otherwise your sites tend to get boycotted pretty quickly. Try and post your most unique sites on these bookmaring sites - if you can catch someone's eye with your site then you soon can find it becoming extremely popular.
Yet again it's important that you simply don't post your hub to these sites, but concentrate on being an active member on the site and posting hubs that are quality hubs and are actually going to be useful for others to read - simply posting a hub selling dongles isn't likely to get the Digg community excited.
Circle of Sites
***NOTE: so far the Google algorithm change does'nt seem to be punishing 'circle of sites' especially as all the mentioned sites are increasing the quality requirements - google continues to like decent back-links from high PR sites.***
When I design a site I actually create 1 main article and then several introduction articles. I post my main article on Hubpages and then spread the other articles over sites like Blogger, Shetoldme, Xomba, Redgage, Best-Reviewer etc. Thus I am creating some quick backlinks before I even start to promote my site. I also find that as I begin to get followers on these other sites I do seem to be getting increased traffic on them.
The key here isn't to create spam copies, but for each site to have some quality information thus giving you several quality avenues into your main hub. You may also want to write pages on different sites that compliment each other. For example you could write a hub on the benefits of herbs on Hubpages, and then write a blog on each individual herb that you have noted on your Hubpage, providing links between the two.
Quality always is better than quantity!
Conclusion
Now I’ve reached a stage where I have a lot of content (over 250 blogs) I need to go back and really work on each of these pages, promote them and get some decent backlinks going. It’s going to take a lot of effort to bring my other sites up to scratch. Using some of the simple methods above on my new sites and following some of the simpler SEO guidelines on using tags and keywords in my content will certainly help my new sites get ranked quickly and get decent traffic.
Again I note the importance of quality - simply posting your links to thousands of sites for the sake of it isn't going to work - it's more about the thought process of why you want to post a link, and what the 'viewer' will think of it that is important.
Please feel free to add your ideas in the comments section and I will investigate and add them to this hub.

Cool info. Backlinking can be hardwork but you just gave me some great ideas on how to backlink effectively
Informative hub SimeyC! I will definitely check out the free version of Imautomator. Thanks.
In my earthquakes-related hubs, I create them with a lot of information and related pictures. I then extract 750 words quality article with a link to the related hub and submit it to EzineArticles. It is still a quick way that takes less than an hour per hub. As you know, Google loves EzineArticles because it is the only Articles Directory that is reviewing the submitted articles manually to ensure the quality. According to Google Analytics; 9% of my hub views are referral from EzineArticles.
very informative hub and I just discovered the back linking sight you named and I have put in about 50 hubs already, of course it take five days.
Great hub. I'm always on the look out for new backlinking strategies--it can be such a time consuming process. Thanks for the info.
I like the sites with dofollow backlinking + Adsense revenue share. This way, you can promote your content, create backlinks and earn some money at the same time. My favorites so far are: RedGage, Ongobee, and SheToldMe. Ezine Articles didn't do anything for me. I posted a few articles there, but there are practically no views in comparison to other sites that I've been using. Maybe they used to give a good exposure before - but not anymore - too overcrowded, too overrated.
Thank You for the information. I agree with a lot of the things you have mentioned. Ezine articles have brought a lot of traffic to my site. Another interresting finding is that stumbleupon has led to a lot of traffic also but mostly bounces. Does anyone know why stumbleupon sends so many bounces when you first submit an article?
Great post ! indeed quality backlinks from article directories, video publishing sites and social bookmarking sites work to rank your blog very well. In addition web 2.0 platforms are also very useful...
I had read that people were getting punished for the link wheels, are all of your site being hosted from the same server, or do you host with a variety of servers?
Hi Simey, a very nice blog about SEO and not spamming the 2.0s. I like your theory and methodology and many an internet marketer should follow your tips. Spreading your mini authority sites is also a good gameplan. Usually, many people are looking for the quick fix, but "sowing the seeds for the future" is what I'll leave as my main comment. Very much your philosophy, I feel and always a good one. Stand strong, link strong and last long!
Yahtzek!
Great article I will try some of these ideas.
Really great post! Thanks.
very useful post!
thanks so much.
Yes, turning scraping into your advantage is a great strategy!
Nice tips.
Great info - I find it hard to find the time to get involved in more than a couple forums, etc., although I know it's important.
also fill out your profiles on twitter and voonee that way your twitter and voonee account will be indexed into search engine make sure you add your links in your profiles
Thank you for some really helpful advice. When you start on line everyone assumes you know all about back linking and how to get them.
Great post. Thank a lot.
I've tried pinging and social bookmarking. These methods take too much time but they are really effective on getting backlinks.
Great Hub!!!!
The hub which is focusing on backlinks is very useful. The information shared is incredibly valuable. The use of sites like Digg, reddit and other bookmarking sites is often a good way to get people to visit your site and also creates an instant backlink. The hub provides information which is immeasurably knowledgeable.
Thank you for the information. As brought up by FCetier, automating the backlink process seems to be counter to quality. At the end of the day you just have to put the time in it sounds like.
Your hub is very useful for sure! Well done!
Some nice info which I will use, rated up and good luck with your backlinking.
up & useful! Well written and informative read, thanks for this interesting info...
I've learned something here, Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge and experience.
Great tips, especially the first one! Thanks
Backlinks brings more traffic , hence have to be participated in more & more networks sites ---- Good information I am going to try this.
interesting ideas, thumbs up
I still doubt about the automated thing to actually work in reality. I have seen its mostly the manual efforts as you mentioned above actually gets the real more traffic.
Thanx
Bookmarked*** Well! I found it the best Post that I have gone through. This is something really interesting. thanks For Sharing
Such a nice information thanks.
Hey SimeyC, I am kind of new to backlinks. Please what are backlinks? Can you give me a starter. Thanks
250 blogs is an incredible amount!
can i aks, how do you go about organising them, and posting on them?
I like your thoughts on mini articles linking back to your hub. I already do this on blogger and snipsly but I think I need to do it on the other pages as well.
I also get some good hits through stumbled upon and reddit. They are worth noting here.
Nice tips there, although I really need to utilise facebook more as I really do tend to neglect it as just a chat to mates type of place.
I just read a similar Hub to yours that contained about the same information, it seems that there aren't TOO many ways to get backlinks, great post tho, good stuff.
Just FYI, I've seen Express Inclusion advertised on several hubs, and I paid for it to promote a professional site of mine and I never saw that it did any good. Same with their other service Speedy Ads. I never got one single lead on my professional site with it, so I'd hesitate paying for any of it here on HP.
As a newbie in writing articles and blogging, I am sure I could learn a lot from you. If I am to backlink my hubs on my blogs, do I have to write my url on Hubpages or just the permalink of my hub? Thanks a lot!
excellent practical advice - thank you.
nice hub, very informative, and good advice!
Good post. I will bookmark it for reference purpose
Good idea with scraping!
I like your approach to taking advantage of the scrappers instead of wasting time trying to fight them.
I like your article. It's very helpful to my work. Thank you Simey C for sharing good point to me.
great article -i find commenting on do follow blogs - and forums also helps to create great links.
another informative hub, thank you so much!
nice idea will try it soon
Very helpful information. Thanks for the info.
Great information. I agree wholeheartedly about participating in the sites you link to. Social networking is as important here on the internet as it in the face to face business world!
Great information. Very helpful. Thank you for sharing :)
Great information! Thank you.
Thanks for sharing this great info, your idea on "Circle of Sites" point and i agree as well to your Comment "Targeted manual linking, with follow up and interaction with the site you link on is the best way!"
The important thread I enjoyed was Content over Quantity and personal involvement with the subject/forum. Thnx
rlw
Thanks! Easy to understand. Very straight forward. I'll give it a try...
Back links are important to any website but my problem is I get a lot of spammy back links I need more targeted links
Very useful info....thanks for sharing.
Very interesting and informative article on backlinking. I learned a new strategy. Thank you, SimeyC
This isn't anything new, but it's really good to hear your supporting the "whitehat" method of back linking.
You are definitely right about scraping. People are going to take your content and reuse it. I create most of my content aside from hosted places like here at huppages with WordPress. I embed links throughout my articles with a shortening/tracking plugin. So my links look something like this:
http://www.mysites.com/nameoflink
The reason you want to do this is simple. If a program you are promoting changes all you have to do is make one simple edit on the backend and your links are updated all across the web no matter where they are.
If you just embed the affiliate link and the affiliate goes out of business or drops you then your links quit working.
Scrapers as you know are generally just software bots and they can't differentiate these kinds of affiliate links. I make a pretty good amount of money with this strategy of embedding links.
voting up! Nice article.
One other really good tip is to find a quality trusted company and just spend a few dollars and buy some directory and social bookmarking links to jumpstart your new projects. I seldom pay more than $10 to get 100 or more links right off - something that would take me hours to do by myself, and it's simply not worth my time.
very good tips and you have published about the most wanted topic..
Great idea for the anti-scraping device of inserting links into your own post. That alone was worth reading this hub for, thanks man!
Jacob
Thanks for the advive, this is an area that I'm always looking for good tips.
I am just starting to try to see how I can take advantage of Facebook.
I have a Blogger blog and I am wondering if when I am in a forum with a topic similar to one of my blogs if I should post a link to the exact blog entry url or my the main url so I am putting the same backlink out there repeatedly?
Thank you I was never really sure what backlinks were. I have wrote articles on and off at different sites. I now know to go back to some of those places and add links to my web site and blog.
Man it's the back linking stuff is what is so difficult. I am also looking into that sort of SEO link building. Just reading books and writing articles.
Will be following your SEO stuff online
I don't bother with backlinking, but maybe I should
Backlinking is really important. I tried the automatic backlinks but it didn't seem to help much. I should check into again. Thanks!
I didn't know that about scraping (yes, I know that people steal my content, but not how to preserve backlinks). Cool - rated up.
I'm new to HubPages and this article has pointed me in the right direction. Thanks, SimeyC!
All the things you mentioned are very time consuming?
The idea of becoming active on Facebook is good. I also like your ideas on syndicating,
Thanks for sharing
I think you did a great job on the hub.Reading your hub taught me alot of things I did not know. nice job.
I have been here for more than a year. I still don't know how that works. I can't understand how others can say they get more than a grand when I have not gotten a dime from it. It is fun to write though. That is what I do here. Thanks for the info.
Thank you for posting this, you got really helpful advice and information here.
Thanks for the info. I'm very new so it will take me some time to truly understand all this but knowing there are good people like you out there to turn to i am confident I will get it :)
Thank you for some good suggestions. Getting backlinks is tough and keeping them seems to be just as difficult. I am quite new to this online stuff and have lots to learn. if people are copying your posts verbatim surely that must hurt as the SEngines would see that as duplicate content?
I find that getting permanent backlinks is just about impossible. I manage to get a few and then for some reason they drop off. I tried commenting on forums, but that was a lot of work. The best results I have had is with submitting articles. Thanks for an interesting post.
How ironic that 95% of the comments on this article are people just trying to get back links back to their hubpages.
If you see comments that amount to nothing more than saying "Nice comment with lots of useful information" then it's just some idiot trying to get backlinks.
i think u did the great job for us . thanks for it.
fantastic tricks, thanks a lot.
thanks for the info man!
Great info. I am attempting to get more backlinks to my hubs. This will definitely help me out.
Very interesting and informative article on backlinks. Thanks for providing such good information.
Thats a great article and is very useful to me. Have you used Ping Fm before? Do you think these links are low quality?
Good hub! The 'scraping' was particularly interesting...I'll have to check out Yoast's plugin. Thanks for the tip!
I found this very helpful, and interesting information. Thanks for the info.
I found the "scraping" information very good! I hadn't thought of that. I have had quite a few articles completely lifted and posted elsewhere without permission. Backlinks would have at least gotten me some more exposure. Great idea!
very nice hub, i lke this and thank you for sharing
I am relatively new to Hub Pages so I appreciate this info on how to make best use of back links in concert with Hubpages. Thanks.
I have read this article about back linking. It is useful. Although it is brief introduction, but it is quite useful.
This is a pretty interesting topic. I found this info to be helpful
Nice hub, couldn't have written it better.
Check out my hub on Quality Backlinks
Ug, so called "scraping" aka plagiarism is the #1 reason I sometimes think about quitting writing for hubpages. I've seen several of my articles stolen in this way, one time they called it "localizing" oh brother. Anyway, I appreciate your approach SimeyC, it's realistic.
Meanwhile, I'm still trying to figure out if creating my own website will multiply my earnings. I've been at Hubpages just over a year here and have only made one google payout which has been disappointing. Writers such as yourself are what keep me coming back. Good advice, well written.
Ben
Thanks, I have now installed RSS Footer on all my Wordpress blogs!
Nice hub. I agree that the focus should always be on writing quality content and not be spammy.
The backlinks idea sounds good - I'll be looking into this.
Thanks for the info. It is interesting.
Hi,
Thanks for the information it is very helpful. Need to get some of this internet traffic to our website over 1 billion users!
SimeyC,
Thanks for a great article. Good information shared. I liked how positive you were with the plagiarism thiefs. Thanks for the idea.
LOVE that you pushed adding value to the web. Thank you.
I get the writing article after article idea, but what about things such as Automatic Article Submitter or Unique Aticle Wizard? What's your experience with them--helpful?
Thanks for the great info, keep it coming!
Good information, thank you!
Thx for the info..i will try it
Some interesting ideas. I will try them.
great hub thanks
I would look at these as an options to get other links indexed, rather than links to a primary site.
I would avoid spinning articles at all costs, there is enough guff on the net as it is. The amount of incoherent spammed articles out there is just ridiculous. If your going to post content, please take a few minutes to write original material.
Yes its great information but may you forget to speak about article directories .. its one of the best ways to get backlinks and traffic.
I agree on articles too. But, the tips here on backlinks are great. I have a few blogs and getting backlinks besides followers is always one of my first concerns.
SimeyC: Yeah fine if they are relevent and informative, some topics like 'fire sprinklers' for example can only have a limited amount of fresh content written about them and the amount of spun rubbish ive seen just annoys me a little.
You should check my hub
http://hubpages.com/hub/Social-Bookmarking-and-Soc
Facebook and Digg do not provide backlinks!
Well structured and really useful Hub, thanks. I'm pretty new to this and SEO and backlinks are something I need to learn about. Will start including some of these suggestions today.
Amazing SEO intro. Good for those who don't know anything. Mind clearer for those that know a bit. Thanks for the info!
Really useful hub, very informative, and lots of good references! I'll be sure to put these tips to good use. :) Thanks!
The ideas you have given are truly fantastic. Now I can think of giving my website a step ahead.
The back links from Digg or Facebook is one best choice to increase traffic. Because both of these are ranked very highly on search engines.
just read it... good tips thanks! :)
I started to write here without knowledge of SEO, Backlinks, traffic....Now I am learning always somethings new! Thanks for your advice!
Very informative hub, Thanks for sharing.
Great hub. Highly informative. Thanks for sharing!
this is a very short article.. need more info
Hi Simey! Since I cannot remain without a comment, these words: Your explanation marvelous and the contents great. It really educates.
SimeyC, this is a great hub with some wonderful information on backlinks. I'm giving myself a refresher course on creating traffic and backlinks, and this is a great resource. Thank you!
Thanks for the tips here, I seem to get stuck in a rut with my link building sometimes.
i tend to just buy backlinks as they are so cheap now
Great info! Thanks for sharing
Thank you this was very useful, you made this simple to learn and for that thank you again!!! I need all the help I can get!!!
Great sharing... this hub really helpful for me.
Good advice. Another way of getting some backlinks is to become a guest poster and post articles on relevent blogs in return for a link back to your own.
Not sure I understand your article spreading.
You say when you start a site you put the main article on HubPages and several intro articles to other sites.
So this main article that you submit to Hubpages... is it the exact article you have on the newly created site?
I do a lot of SEO writing myself. Great info and definitely a new take on the subject. You have some great suggestions and insight. Thank you!
wow these were a lot of comments to read through :D Great info here SimeyC. Like many have stated, I particularly liked your point about the scraping. It's a shame SEO requires so much continued upkeep and effort! But no pain no gain I suppose! :)
Thanks!
This Hub helped me soooo much! Thank you for writing it!
Awesome hub, this is just what I needed, I have been struggling with hubpages ever since joining, thank you!
Great hub, it's part of my education on the SEO process :)
sound like a lot of work but i see it useful to get your site seen an have people interested in what you have.
Elia
Very informative hub. Thanks for sharing some of your techniques on backlinks.
Great stuff...Some facebook pages are actually dofollow.
After creating an article on HubPages, do you rewrite it on another site or do you write up a simple description and provide a link to your more extensive writeup on HubPages?
Thank you so much, the concept just "clicked". I have been trying to figure out backlinks, how much do I write on a subsequent site. Now to perfect the keyword process. Thank you again.
Great tips, you've highlighted some essential backlink building methods. I also find reading and commenting on blogs using do-follow and commentluv really help towards getting quality backlinks, thanks.
Informative and useful hub. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with the fellow hubbers.
Indeed backlinking effectively does have great value in google..
Just learnt about the new google updates. Thx. I noticed one of site has droped in the serps..could this be the cause?
If the site has links to certain pages that big G doesn't flow with then your sites are boud to be affected..
So watch out
What I like to do is to routinely search Google for my article. When I find someone has copied one I contact them immediately and require that they take down the page. This works fairly well thought not perfectly.
I have used digg, we can get decent backlinks as digg and other social networking sites have huge traffic and hence they have high PR. i now use facebook to get traffic.
Nice and useful article. I agree the Panda update will not hurt people who has been building backlinks and writing content the right way. It is only going to hurt lazy people.
Great article. I need all the information I can get about backlinks and how to promote my hubs and website which is DiscoverHomeJobs.com Thanks!
Very informative really like it..
Thanks

I'm concerned about automated stuff online. What's the alternative?
