How to get decent backlinks

How to get decent back links after the Google algorithm change

One of the first things I learnt when I began to delve into the weird and wonderful world of SEO is the importance of backlinks – the second thing I learnt was that creating backlinks can be a highly tedious affair.

So I began to look into ways of buildings backlinks without having to do much work.

A note about the google algorithym change

Many SEO experts are scrambling to understand the changes that occurred to Google's Algorythm in February 2011 and how best to combat them. However, the changes will not change my strategy that much. I've always focused on quality content and quality links, and although I'll be more careful on the site where I place a link, and the content I add to this site, the overall strategy really doesn't change much. My traffic has gone down this week but I fully expect it to recover and hopefully actually benefit from the changes,

Using ‘Scraping’ to promote links.

This is more for bloggers than Hubpagers, but one thing I’ve found is that quite a few of my blog entries have been copied in their entirety (or scraped) – so rather than try and stop people from doing this and spending hours or days trying to force them to delete the content, I have found that if I can insert some links to my other pages, then I will at least get a benefit out of this copied content.

The one way to do this is to use a plugin designed by Yoast – it’s an RSS Footer plugin for wordpress – essentially install the plugin and add some links using this tool to your hubpages, blogs etc. Thus when someone ‘scrapes’ your content at least you’ll have some backlinks.

(It's ironic that this hub has actually been scraped! While I have filed a complaint, it is interesting to see that the scraper has included my links - so at least the scrape may be beneficial to me)

Forum / directory signature

Quite often I will be active in forums and directories even when I am not trying to promote a website – for example, today I did a lot of research trying to find out how to finish an installation of Windows 7 after encountering a ‘restart loop’ – I visited probably 50 websites and left relevant comments on each of them – where possible I include a link to a relevant site of mine. I do note that each of the links I place were relevant to the discussion – simply putting a link to XBOX Games in a Windows 7 forum isn’t going to get you much traffic and in many cases may well get you banned from the forum.

It is very important that you are an active member of the forums you post in - simply adding comments just to get backlinks is not acceptable and can often get a backlash to your site and indeed to Hubpages. The same goes for directories - simply spamming every directory with every hub is an overkill and probably will not help in SEO - the best thing to do is select some very good directories and then only post relevant and quality sites to these directories.

Facebook

This is my newest place to post links – I have joined quite a few groups on Facebook that interest me. I visit these groups and participate – occasionally someone will ask a question about something I have already written a web page and I’ll provide a link to my content – as I am known in the group and constantly participate in the group then I do get quite a lot of traffic this way. It’s part of my normal day routine to visit these groups so I’m not spending that much additional time getting back-links.

As I mentioned above, it is important that you don't overdo this and don't simply post every hub to every group you can find. Become an active member on some groups and then only post quality hubs that are relevant to the group or the discussion.

Digg

The use of sites like Digg, reddit and other bookmarking sites is often a good way to get people to visit your site and also creates an instant backlink - it is important that you are active on these sites otherwise your sites tend to get boycotted pretty quickly. Try and post your most unique sites on these bookmaring sites - if you can catch someone's eye with your site then you soon can find it becoming extremely popular.

Yet again it's important that you simply don't post your hub to these sites, but concentrate on being an active member on the site and posting hubs that are quality hubs and are actually going to be useful for others to read - simply posting a hub selling dongles isn't likely to get the Digg community excited.

Circle of Sites

***NOTE: so far the Google algorithm change does'nt seem to be punishing 'circle of sites' especially as all the mentioned sites are increasing the quality requirements - google continues to like decent back-links from high PR sites.***

When I design a site I actually create 1 main article and then several introduction articles. I post my main article on Hubpages and then spread the other articles over sites like Blogger, Shetoldme, Xomba, Redgage, Best-Reviewer etc. Thus I am creating some quick backlinks before I even start to promote my site. I also find that as I begin to get followers on these other sites I do seem to be getting increased traffic on them.

The key here isn't to create spam copies, but for each site to have some quality information thus giving you several quality avenues into your main hub. You may also want to write pages on different sites that compliment each other. For example you could write a hub on the benefits of herbs on Hubpages, and then write a blog on each individual herb that you have noted on your Hubpage, providing links between the two.

Quality always is better than quantity!

Conclusion

Now I’ve reached a stage where I have a lot of content (over 250 blogs) I need to go back and really work on each of these pages, promote them and get some decent backlinks going. It’s going to take a lot of effort to bring my other sites up to scratch. Using some of the simple methods above on my new sites and following some of the simpler SEO guidelines on using tags and keywords in my content will certainly help my new sites get ranked quickly and get decent traffic.

Again I note the importance of quality - simply posting your links to thousands of sites for the sake of it isn't going to work - it's more about the thought process of why you want to post a link, and what the 'viewer' will think of it that is important.

Please feel free to add your ideas in the comments section and I will investigate and add them to this hub.

Cool info. Backlinking can be hardwork but you just gave me some great ideas on how to backlink effectively

SimeyC profile image

SimeyC Hub Author 21 months ago

FCEtier - I tend to agree about automation and that's why I only list one site - there are literally hundreds. The one I chose seems to have a good strategy and so far has been good for me. If you're not using automation, the best thing I find is to really become involved in some major blogs and forums - the more you comment, with decent informative comments, the more people will actually follow the links - it's very hard and time consuming work though - another way is to really concentrate on making a blog and getting fans - the more fans, the more traffic - again takes time and effort!

One final way, that is also time consuming is pinging - while most search engines will crawl your sites - pinging just adds a 'reminder' in a way...there are some pretty good automated pings sites.

It really is a fine balance - the biggest thing is to create decent content - make sure you spatter decent key words throughout your content too!

Informative hub SimeyC! I will definitely check out the free version of Imautomator. Thanks.

In my earthquakes-related hubs, I create them with a lot of information and related pictures. I then extract 750 words quality article with a link to the related hub and submit it to EzineArticles. It is still a quick way that takes less than an hour per hub. As you know, Google loves EzineArticles because it is the only Articles Directory that is reviewing the submitted articles manually to ensure the quality. According to Google Analytics; 9% of my hub views are referral from EzineArticles.

ThereseN 20 months ago

I like the sites with dofollow backlinking + Adsense revenue share. This way, you can promote your content, create backlinks and earn some money at the same time. My favorites so far are: RedGage, Ongobee, and SheToldMe. Ezine Articles didn't do anything for me. I posted a few articles there, but there are practically no views in comparison to other sites that I've been using. Maybe they used to give a good exposure before - but not anymore - too overcrowded, too overrated.

Thank You for the information. I agree with a lot of the things you have mentioned. Ezine articles have brought a lot of traffic to my site. Another interresting finding is that stumbleupon has led to a lot of traffic also but mostly bounces. Does anyone know why stumbleupon sends so many bounces when you first submit an article?

I had read that people were getting punished for the link wheels, are all of your site being hosted from the same server, or do you host with a variety of servers?

SimeyC profile image

SimeyC Hub Author 18 months ago

smanley01: I have sites on directories, blogger etc - I don't overuse them and make sure that each site itself is totally unique and has some decent information - providing a link to a main 'overall' site - for example I have quite a few hubs on Final Fantasy XIII hints and tips - I have a main hub, and then individual more detailed hubs which all link to each other. Additionally I then have several reviews on blogger and a couple of other sites that link back! So I am providing added value with each of these sites...

Hi Simey, a very nice blog about SEO and not spamming the 2.0s. I like your theory and methodology and many an internet marketer should follow your tips. Spreading your mini authority sites is also a good gameplan. Usually, many people are looking for the quick fix, but "sowing the seeds for the future" is what I'll leave as my main comment. Very much your philosophy, I feel and always a good one. Stand strong, link strong and last long!

TravelNonuDotCom: I agree - I actually removed the section on automated 'links' as Google are very wary about these types of programs and it's potentially harmful to your Google Rank anyways - I guess that if something is too easy then it probably doesn't have a huge benefit!

Targeted manual linking, with follow up and interaction with the site you link on is the best way!

MikeNV profile image

You are definitely right about scraping. People are going to take your content and reuse it. I create most of my content aside from hosted places like here at huppages with WordPress. I embed links throughout my articles with a shortening/tracking plugin. So my links look something like this:

http://www.mysites.com/nameoflink

The reason you want to do this is simple. If a program you are promoting changes all you have to do is make one simple edit on the backend and your links are updated all across the web no matter where they are.

If you just embed the affiliate link and the affiliate goes out of business or drops you then your links quit working.

Scrapers as you know are generally just software bots and they can't differentiate these kinds of affiliate links. I make a pretty good amount of money with this strategy of embedding links.

voting up! Nice article.

One other really good tip is to find a quality trusted company and just spend a few dollars and buy some directory and social bookmarking links to jumpstart your new projects. I seldom pay more than $10 to get 100 or more links right off - something that would take me hours to do by myself, and it's simply not worth my time.

Most search engines are able to know when your site has been updated so Pinging is a little bit of overkill!

I'm not a fan of any method that involves automation - targeted traffic that you pay for does have some value though.

The back links from Digg or Facebook is one best choice to increase traffic. Because both of these are ranked very highly on search engines.

machbio: I actually wrote the hub with the intention of being short. I found that early on when I was trying to learn that all the get hubs on SEO and backlinking were far to detailed for me! This is almost like a beginners guide - perhaps I'll do a far more detailed one going deeper into SEO techniques and provide a link at the bottom!

Good advice. Another way of getting some backlinks is to become a guest poster and post articles on relevent blogs in return for a link back to your own.

Not sure I understand your article spreading.

You say when you start a site you put the main article on HubPages and several intro articles to other sites.

So this main article that you submit to Hubpages... is it the exact article you have on the newly created site?

wow these were a lot of comments to read through :D Great info here SimeyC. Like many have stated, I particularly liked your point about the scraping. It's a shame SEO requires so much continued upkeep and effort! But no pain no gain I suppose! :)

SimeyC profile image

SimeyC Hub Author 16 months ago

SimonRay: no - as an example - I'll have an article on the top ten science fiction books on hubpages - and then on a different site I'll have a quick review on one of the top ten, with a link back to the main hubpages. I also have a more detailed review on a seperate hubpage. SO my teaser review brings readers to my main top ten site and then onto a more detailed review..

After creating an article on HubPages, do you rewrite it on another site or do you write up a simple description and provide a link to your more extensive writeup on HubPages?

SimeyC profile image

SimeyC Hub Author 15 months ago

MimiKat33: I count Hubpages as my main center for articles. So I'll write a major article on here and then have feeder articles on different sites and blogs with links to this artcile. For example I may have a hub about Bobble Heads on here, and then I'd write a few mini articles about Bobble Heads on Blogger, or other sites and then put 'if you want to know more about Bobble HEads then go to my Bobble Head site...."

Thank you so much, the concept just "clicked". I have been trying to figure out backlinks, how much do I write on a subsequent site. Now to perfect the keyword process. Thank you again.

If the site has links to certain pages that big G doesn't flow with then your sites are boud to be affected..

So watch out

What I like to do is to routinely search Google for my article. When I find someone has copied one I contact them immediately and require that they take down the page. This works fairly well thought not perfectly.

I have used digg, we can get decent backlinks as digg and other social networking sites have huge traffic and hence they have high PR. i now use facebook to get traffic.
