How to make Extra Money on the Web

83

By SimeyC

Who wants to be a millionaire?

Oh no, not another ‘how to make a fortune on the web’ hub! Well not quite.

There are many ways to make money on the web, but like anything in life the more you put into something the more you’ll get out of it. The sites I list below require a lot of work; even with a lot of work, great content and a desire to make money, you may not earn much.

It’s possible to make a fortune, but I’d say the average person using these sites will probably make less than $100 a month. So why bother? Well, I get far more out of these sites than money – if I can help someone, then that in itself is reward.

IMPORTANT: in many cases, to be approved as an affiliate to the sites I mention (including Google Adsense) you need to have an established website or blog. Create a blog at blogger.com and make sure the blog is at least a month old, with a month's worth of decent blog postings, before you apply for any affiliate program.

Bookmark this hub - I'll continue to add opportunities as I find them.

Just in

In this section I will highlight new sites I have joined and let you know as I go along how well I am doing:

Slicethepie is a new site I've joined. If you like listening to new up and coming music, and also like to review music then this is the site for you. It pays you between 5c and 20c for each review but you have to listen to each song for 90 seconds. The potential to earn is good and if you are a top reviewer you could earn up to $8 an hour using this site. I'm averaging about $3.50 an hour so far, which is better than many writing sites I am on - I tend to spend an hour reviewing a day.

Socipoll is a site that allows you to create and participate in polls. The only current way you can earn is by referring other users - you get between 20c to $5 for each referral depending on how active they are. It's a fun site and has the potential to grow!

Best-reviewer - you've seen them all over the web - Top Ten lists - well why not create your own and make some money while you're at it. This site has Google Adsense share and also allows you to add links to your own articles. Example, say you have 10 articles on the top ten movies - then you could create a list of Top Ten Movies and have a backlink to all 10 articles.

Hubpages

This site you are reading was designed using Hubpages. There are several sites on the web that allow you to build your own sites using unique content and Hubpages is the easiest to use and seems to be the quickest to get search engines interested.

Hubpages uses a different approach to many other similar sites and allows you to earn in several ways:

  • Google Adsense - as long as you have a Google Adsense, Hubpages shares the revenue with you - my experience so far is good, with 38 hubs I am averaging about $1.50 a day - obviously the more quality hubs I build the higher this will grow.
  • Affiliates - Hubpages focuses on Amazon and eBay affiliates and again shares revenue with you - so far in a month I've had six sales, but this is more reliant on decent content than anything else.
  • Other Affiliates - you can add 'links' to other affiliates and earn 100% of the revenue, but you are limited to two links.

Note: I will gain a percentage of your revenues when you join up using the link on the right.

Webanswers

I recently found this site. It's a bit like Yahoo answers as it allows you to ask questions and post answers on a whole variety of subjects. It's very easy to use and can be great fun.

After a while, the author of the question may choose your answer as the best answer to the question and this will add to your quality score. Not only that, if you have an Google Adsense account, Webanswers will share revenue on questions that you answer - rotating ads based on the quality score - if you win the best answer then you get most of the adsense clicks.

The site says that you only have to answer 10 questions and get two awarded questions to be able to sign up for a Google Adsense account, so this is a great way to earn money as well as getting an Adsense account.

Please note I may get additional revenue if you join Webanswers using the link provided.

Excerptz

This site designed by one of the better writers on Hubpages is a good secondary place to create articles and gain traffic and click-throughs - it's one of the better traffic gaining sites and has a neat and clean feel.

You can earn Google Adsense income (share currently 80%) or add up to three affiliate links within your articles - it's very easy to use and is an up and coming website.

Please note I will not get revenue if you join Excerptz using the link provided.

Wizzley

Wizzley is the latest article writing site that share revenue with you; with the ability to add your own affiliate links, or share revenue on Google, Zazzle, Amazon and Allposters it gives the most choice for affiliate marketers to earn revenue.

It's similar to Hubpages and Squidoo and allows you to add modules to organize and design pages quickly and easily - it's very intuitive and while it is new it looks like it could grow into something really good.

Please note I may get additional revenue if you join Wizzley using the link provided.

Squidoo

Squidoo is one of my favorite sites. It provides some amazing tools to build a web page (or Lens) very quickly and easily. Not only that, but the community is very helpful and will always help out a ‘newbie’. While you can monetize a Squidoo Lens very easily, it’s very very difficult to create a Lens that will earn a lot of money.

With Squidoo you can earn money in several ways:

  • By being a top lens you can earn $10+ a month
  • By sharing revenue from ebay, amazon, cafepress, zazzle etc.
  • By promoting affiliate sites.

It takes a lot of work to create a great Lens, and then you also have to be able to market and advertise the Lens to get the best out of it.

Note: I will gain $5 if you join Squidoo - however I only earn this when you have earned $15.

Xomba

This is a new site that I have joined. It's similar to a lot of write and earn sites, but has a couple of twists. There are two way so of posting on the site:

  • Similar to Hubpages, Ezinearticles etc you can write an article and post it to the site.
  • Similar to sites like reddit, digg you can add a link and give a brief description of the link content.

There are a couple of ways you can earn on Xomba:

  • If you have an adsense account, you can share the adsense revenue 50% / 50% with Xomba. Each article or link you write will have Google Ads located next to them - you therefore can get some clicks.
  • If you refer a new member, you will get 10% of their adsense revenue.

This site seems pretty good and has a decent following. It seems to be a great place to create backlinks to your Hubs or other articles and thereby increase their search engine ranking.

Note: I don't gain anything by you joining ehow using the link provided.

eHow

While I don’t think many people will make much money from eHow, it is a fun site that allows you to create simple ‘How to’ pages. If you happen to hit the right niche you could make upwards of $20 per ‘how’ – one of my ‘how to’ pages earns about $15 a month with no work on my part – pure luck, but I’m not complaining.

I don't gain anything by you joining ehow using the link provided.

Epinions

Epinions is a site aimed at consumers. To earn money on the site, you simply have to write opinions about products and services – the better the quality of the opinion, and the more visits you get, the more you’re likely to earn.

The key to epinions is to hit it at the right time. Quite often they’ll have promotions where they’ll pay $10 for every 10 opinions written (with a limit of $100 per month) – the opinions have to be rated well by the community but as long as you are a good writer and know the product you are writing about then you could do well.

On top of that, the best opinions will get recurring revenue – I don’t use the site often any more, but my opinions still earn a couple of dollars a month even though I haven’t written an opinion for over a year.

I don't gain any money by you joining using the link provided- but feel free to read my ePinions!

Zazzle

This potentially is the biggest earner out of all the sites I use to try and earn money on the web. It gives the user the ability to create products (such as t-shirts, mouse pads, posters, stamps etc). You can upload your own artwork etc, and if you have some artistic ability but also have the ability to market yourself then you could do really well on here – you can set your own ‘mark up’ on the products.

So far I’ve made a big fat $0 on here, but I know of many people who make decent money on Zazzle – the difference being, they have talent! I do not!

I will earn a percentage of your earnings on Zazzle if you join using the link provided.

Affiliates

One of the most lucrative ways of making money on the web is by using affiliate links. Sites like eBay, Amazon, Apple etc all allow you to become an affiliate and add links, banners, widgets etc that link to their products.

If you combine affiliate links with content that is relevant and well written then you'll probably get some click throughs and possibly some revenue from sales.

Hubpages allows you to share your affilaite links for major sites like Amazon and eBay, and also allows you to place up to two affiliate links in your hub.

Sites like Squidoo have no limit on the way in which you use affiliates, but do not allow you to share your Adsense revenue.

There are three companies that allow you to apply for and maintain affiliate memberships - they both are similar and generally you'll find that if you have decent content, then you'll get decent returns.

Note - I will gain a flat fee of $1.50 if you join Linkshare - I will gain nothing if you join CJ.com or google affiliate network.

Ask for Donations

There are many sites on the web that provide a ton of information and are constantly updated. These sites don't rely on advertising, and mostly the writing of the site is done by a volunteer.

What I have seen from these sites is an option for the reader to donate to the site (usually through a Paypal button). This does not offend me, and if I use the site often and gain a lot of value from it then I will pay a couple of dollars to the site to help keep it alive.

This isn't possible on Hubpages, but for pages that accept HTML, PayPal provides you the code to add a 'donate' button to your page.

Note: I will gain 0.5% of your revenue *up to $1000 if you join Paypal using the link provided.

Redgage

From their website:

"RedGage gives you the power to share your blogs, pictures, videos, documents, and links all in one convenient place. But, the most exciting part is...

RedGage is a website that pays you for the content you create. "

Like many sites on the web such as Digg, Reddit etc., this site gives you the opportunity to share your content, or content you have found on the web. Not only that, you can earn money while doing this - you can earn in a couple of ways:

  • per 1000 clicks - you get paid a set amount for every 1000 clicks on all your 'content' - the rate I currently get is $1.18.
  • Contests - the more active you are on the site, the more chance you have of winning daily, weekly and monthly contests.
  • Featured articles - write a great article or link a great website and you could have a 'featured article' - each featured article gets a bonus - usually about $4.50.

I've used this site for about a month and so far have earned just over $10. It's a great way of promoting your Hubs or Lenses, or even your blogs while adding a few dollars here or there.

I don't gain any money by you joining using the link provided- but feel free to add me as a friend!

Google Adsense

Take a look around this hub and you'll notice a lot of advertising that seems to link to the content. Most of this advertising is from the Google Adsense program.

Essentially, by joining Google Adsense, you can gain revenue by having your readers click contextual advertising. You can use Adsense in many different ways:

  • Sites like Hubpages share revenue by allowing you to add your Google ID and have the advertising on a Hub link to your website.
  • You can directly add Google Ads to your own blogs.
  • You can add Google Ads to your own personal websites.

While most people will not make millions using Google Ads, you can make a steady income especially as traffic to your websites and blogs increases.

I do not gain money if you join Adsense using the link provided.

A personal note....

When I first started joining websites like these above many years ago I somehow resented the person who was trying to get me to sign up and gain affiliate revenue by simply providing a link. However, as I matured as a Internet user I changed my views. My reasoning is below:

  • I do not gain by not signing up using someone's affiliate link - it does not cost me any money or prestige.
  • I would not have found these sites without the affiliate link.
  • If people stop making money out of these links, then they will stop posting them and the whole affiliate concept will die out.

So I now always sign up using the link provided - if only to pay it forward! I'm not asking you to use any of the links I provide - I've told you where I will make money if you sign up, and it's up to you to choose to click or not to click on my affiliate link.

Do you use any of these sites? If so how successful are you?

Great advice, I'm still on the fence with Google Adsense, I've been waiting. I get different views on this. What's yours?

SimeyC profile image

SimeyC Hub Author 2 years ago

Well I've gained more 'adsense' from Hubpages in three weeks than I have in about 3 years - so I'm slowly changing my views. I definately note that the ROI is very small - but if it continues to grow as I add more Hubs then after the initial 'investment' in designing the hub, the rest will become free money I guess!

I have had the best overall luck with Adsense over the years. The others come and go but those clicks keep in trickling in and adding up.

Enertia 2 years ago

Nice collection of links. I think with Google Adsense you need to box clever as they are become more and more strict with their terms. They are trying to make it easier though. Google Adsense for Domains is a God send! Have been waiting so long for them to do this.

hello simey..that's a great compilation. i did try out Redgage, but couldn't sign up. as for the google adsense...how long does it take to get approved? and what's the criterion?

SimeyC profile image

SimeyC Hub Author 2 years ago

tinarathore - Redgage can be a little slow - so you may have to be patient when pressing the 'sign-up' - maybe also try with firefox instead of IE?

AS for adsense - not sure now - I joined about 4 years ago and have only really started using now - like most they are getting stricter and they are looking for decent content and probably backlinks to drive traffic to google ads....

Loved it !!

Specially Zazzle thanks for introducing to such a fun site.

I am surely going to try it.

Does all add space on squido belongs to the publisher or squido has some banners in it.

SimeyC profile image

SimeyC Hub Author 2 years ago

Squidoo owns most of the banners and ads - but 'shares' the revenue with the overall users - generally if you have a good Lens you'll get perhaps max $2 per Lens if they are inthe top 10000 lenses.....however there is no limitation to the ads you can add yourself - so if you have an ebay, amazon, allposters affiliate - you can add the affiliate code and earn 100% revenue - it takes a lot of work (and you can also reduce the Squidoo advertising) - but you can make decent money...

SimeyC profile image

SimeyC Hub Author 2 years ago

Slight correction for Squidoo - the Google ads revenue is shared by all members (top 80,000 lenses) - any Squidoo modules such as eBay, Amazon etc share the revenue between Squidoo and the Lens writer - you can add your own affiliate links as I mentioned though!

Also - feel free to contact me with any questions - I'll be more than willing to help!

Good info. I still can't decide whether adsense is going to be a viable source of income. I'm thinking the real money is in PPC and larger affiliate offers or CPA. I'm only new, but this seems like the way all the guys earning the big bucks are going.

SimeyC profile image

SimeyC Hub Author 2 years ago

jimmyred - personally I think the most money can be made with affilliates - but that will vary depending on the economy and also the products you sell - what I am seeing from Adsense is that it is fairly consistent - and as you get more hubs published it will increase - so while it might not be huge, it'll cover any bad months you may have.

Thanks for the tips! Although you seem to have left off Hubpages ;-)

I like HP a lot more than Squidoo, and they seem to do a lot better at getting found by the search engines. Do you feel differently about that?

SimeyC profile image

SimeyC Hub Author 2 years ago

Joel - I left off HP as I assumed the reader was already using it - however I should add it as there may be some non-members reading it.

Squidoo and HP have their own strong pointsd - HP does seem to get better search engine rankings, but Squidoo allows you to design a far better 'site' - you can add a lot of CSS, HTML and other formatting to Squidoo.

I am starting to use them together, so they are a good counterpoint to each other.

People resent affiliate links because they think if they use them they will be "overpaying"... but they don't resent buying food at a grocery store?

As an affiliate you are a middleman... you are paid for matching a consumer to a product or service. If you take out the middleman then you remove the "match", but it doesn't lower the cost of the product... it just shifts more profit to the producer and eliminates the profit to the affiliate.

Affiliate marketing is one of the most difficult tasks because you are always working for free until a transaction is made. How many people would appreciate it if they did all their work and their boss told them we are going to keep your check this week. We decided we like your work, but we just don't want to pay you!

I can spot an affiliate link, and if I need something I am not promoting I don't care if they guy makes his money. After all they provided me with the information I needed to make the purchase. It's all about how people view things.

FYI: In a Forrester Research Study in August 2009 it was revealed that 30-40% of Affiliate Cookies set by LinkShare and CJ are automatically removed by Security Software. And most people run some kind of security software. So out of the gate 1/3 of the work you do will not be compensated. And LinkShare and CJ are both very good networks I use both.

MikeNV - I have to admit that once I was the kind of guy who didn't click the link - but then I came to the same conclusion as you - I would not have found out about the product without the link - and also it doesn't cost anything for me so why not!

Jyoti Kothari - thanks! I always believe that honesty is the best policy - if I'm upfront then people have a choice - sure I may lose some links, but I'm not totally here for the money anyway!

Power Glider: what I tend to do is to write complementary articles on the different sites. Simply placing the same content on different sites won't do much for you - and in some cases is frowned upon - Hubpages preferes original content. The key I think is to pick one of the sites as your main article writing site and then use the others to send traffic to that site...

Started with Squidoo and have several lenses, but HubPages is better overall since I've earned more in less time from adsense. I'll stop rambling...thanks for this hub!

Excellent hub on a variety of potential income sources. It's a time-consuming process, a labor of love; but well worth it, given the potential.

Thanks Simey-great hub. I might try a few of these. I am on Associated Content and The Examiner as well. I make a little from them, but they aren't as much fun as Hub Pages. I have made the most so far from associated Content. I also got introduced to She Told Me from another hubber, but haven't spent alot of time there. Thanks!

Thanks for the great information. For some added information I have been writing for ehow for almost a year and have several articles that are approaching $100 each, and about 15 that are approaching $50 each. Not bad for an hour or less of time.

Allen Douglas: ehow is pretty good - although there's a lot going on at the moment with ehow.co.uk publishing ehow.com articles and not paying the US members...

Just when I think I've heard of all the money making sites, I learn of more. Super informative and comprehensive hub and realistic about what the earning potential is for many of the sites. I'm still trying many things out but coming to conclusion focus is key - each 'method' requires dedicated work to make it pay off and it's important to budget your time wisely.

Great Hub! I am very interested in information on HubPages vs. Squidoo. I joined both 6 months ago but basically working on HubPages. However, I see more potential earnings from affiliate marketing in Squidoo. Do you have any Suggestion?

SimeyC profile image

SimeyC Hub Author 22 months ago

I think that using both is perhaps the best idea. Squidoo does allow you to add more affiliate links and allows you to produce more 'vibrant' hubs, but I've found mu Hubpages are listed higher automatically in Google - so creating sister sites that link to each other not only creates backlnks, but hopefully will get traffic from your hubpage to your squidoo page!

hello SimeyC, great hub, Im in the point were Im about to give up everything and I know about everything. I get backlinks for my hubs, I research them using google keywords for low competition, some show up, some dont, and cents are just being made. Then some guy shows up (not you) saying he made 2000 bucks on a weekend with squidoo for something he just published. Can you believe that? I cant! eesh. There has to be a better way.

Useful info. I just started using Webanswers. I now have to answer 200 posts or get 10 awards to get the adsense revenue, much harder than when you wrote about it. Luckily I don't give up easily:)

They also don't let you edit answers until you have reached the target, so I'm going to have to be careful what I type.

Hi, I've been doing hubpages, squidoo, xomba, shetoldme, and some selling affiliates like amazon and shareasale for the last two years. Income from internet is great, it helps me financially. Now I can retire from my office and work at home, earning some money while taking care of my kid. You have listed great resources of internet income!

Great hub, I just signed up with SheToldMe as I had never even heard of it until now. You have 888 followers as of right now, that is my lucky number. Perhaps this means something. Hopefully good news for the both of us. lol

It's always interesting to find little ways to earn a bit extra. I was surprised not to see WebAnswers in the mix, although this Hub does happen to be from 20 months ago. But you've been fairly active there. I actually get pretty good traffic and clicks from WebAnswers and am curious how that fares for you—would you say you generate the most from HubPages or WebAnswers or some other site? In any event, keep on hubbing.

Soringboard: Webanswers is in there, second one after Hubpages. Overall I earn the most from Hubpages as I can leverage eBay and Amazon - I get a nice residual income from Webanswers even though I'm not currently that active. The problem for me currently is that I am taking a look at all my Hubs and trying to update them to improve quality so that they rise up the Google rankings again - takes me away from Webanswers too! I also find that WA is just a little too static - there have been promises of upgrades, including being able to see quality score - but this was supposed to happen in January - it's now April...

After Hubpages, I like Seekyt.com best. The site has a great community and the owner (administrator) is very helpful. Yet, I'm still missing out on how to earn writing articles on both sites - this stops me from trying my luck with other sites. Once I figure out what it takes (or once I start working on the parts of the puzzle I've already learned), I plan to write elsewhere, too. Nice hub, very informative. Bookmarked for future reference and voted up :)

Very informative hub, thanks. I get the value of inbound links for SEO purposes, but I wonder, how long does it take to set up and manage all of these affiliate programs? And is the profit worthwhile? I've done a few myself, but it's been my experience that the profits never outway the time and energy involved. I'd be interested to find out how much one can expect to earn realistically per month compared to how much time is involved. Any ideas?

SimeyC profile image

SimeyC Hub Author 4 months ago

webcopyguru: I'd estimate I'm seeing 5 to 10 times the revenue due to limited SEO - I don't think you need to do a lot to see improvement, but the more you do the better - although it can be overdone too!
