Lego Star Wars

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…..
It is a period of civil war. Lego spaceships, striking from a
hidden Lego base, have won their first victory against the evil Galactic
Empire.
During the battle, Rebel spies managed to steal secret plans to the
Empire's ultimate weapon, the Lego Death Star, an armored Lego space station
with enough Lego power to destroy an entire planet.
Pursued by the Empire's sinister Lego agents, Princess “Lego” Leia races home
aboard her Lego starship, custodian of the stolen plans that can save her
people and restore freedom to the Lego galaxy...

OK I am perhaps a little incorrect in my remembrance of the opening scenes to the amazing film Star Wars. I’m sure Lego wasn’t in the initial scrolling text, but I could be wrong it was a long time ago!

Suffice to say, that as a 12 year old I was fascinated by the movie Star Wars, and although my days of playing with Lego were close to an end, I really wish that the Lego Star Wars kits had been available when the original movie was released.

The movie itself inspired my love for Science Fiction books, and I have spent many hours trying to recreate that early excitement of a movie that, for its time, had amazing special effects and really had the ability to transport the watcher into the deep recesses of space.

Now, years later as I watch my young Nephew create Star Wars movies using his Lego set and post them on YouTube, I yearn for those days of innocence, and really wish I could have done more with my Lego kit than build a white and red house.

It’s amazing what you can actually buy from Lego these days. Not only can you get all the main characters such as Darth Vader, Hans Solo, Princess Leia, Yoda but you can also get superbly fun and detailed enemies such as Storm Troopers etc.

More amazingly, most of the space ships such as the Star Fighter have been faithfully created and allow a young child (and adult!) to recreate the Star Wars universe in great detail – the design of these models is incredible and it really has allowed the two different genres to mix.

The great thing about these toys is not only are they fun, but they are also educational. They require planning and often require the child to follow a complicated set of instructions – these skills that are built while playing with Lego Star Wars kits, added to the exercise of using ones imagination are invaluable tools that can be used as the child grows up.

Overall, these toys are excellent –they are fun, educational and safe for older children (they can be choking hazards for younger children).

I really wish I was young again….
