While I do not expect the paper book will ever disappear, more and more people are reading e-books on their Kindle, Nook or iPad. The ease of use of these devices, combined with the ability to store thousands of books on them have really led to a revolution in book sales.
What is amazing is that there are literally millions of free e-books available online that you can download to use on these devices. Here are a sample of some of the best free e-books available (note some of these may be free for a short time):
Treasure Island
This timeless classic adventure about Pirates, Adventure, Treasure and parrots has been read by millions of people and has been made into several movies and influence many others. It is a great read for younger children and really is a good way to start an interest in reading for them!
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle has created one of the greatest fictional detectives of all time, and also one of the best side-kicks! Sherlock Holmes and Watson are perhaps the most famous fictional duo of all time, and together they face and solve many mysterious crimes. Doyle has an amazing ability to create a scene and keep you in suspense with his great writing – another book suitable for teenagers!
The Legends of King Arthur and his Knights
King Arthur is one of my favorite mythical characters, and while there is some truth to the legends, the combination of history, magic and intrigue has always fascinated me! These Legends are amazing, and take you back to a time of valor and honor, and also deceit and betrayal - a great book for anyone!
Gulliver’s Travels
Yet another timeless classic that is full of fun, adventure. This is one of my childhood favorites, especially when Gulliver becomes a giant – I always used to imagine what that would be like. You’ll find this fascinating story following Gulliver as he travels to different lands and deals with many difficult situations both fascinating and fun!
The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood
I’m sure you’ve heard that he ‘steals from the rich and gives to the poor’? This exciting book about the challenges of Robin Hood, the people that join his merry band, and the foes he meets like the Sherriff of Nottingham is one of the most exciting and well written books you will find. Robin Hood is one of the most intriguing characters from British Legend and this has been mirrored in TV shows and movies for a long time!
The Jungle Book
I have to admit that I saw the cartoon long before reading the book, and I really wish I had read the book first! Rudyard Kipling is one of the best children’s writers there is; he instills so much character into his books, and fills them with humor – the main characters really jump out at you and there’s no doubt this is a great bed time book for any children!
Oliver Twist
‘Please sir can I have some more’ is perhaps one of the most heard lines from any Charles Dickens book – with a couple of classic movies, this classic tale of hardship, wrong doing and sheer goodness of humanity is a pleasure to read – it is amazingly well written and really describes the dark side of London really well. It really is a classic book to read if you want to see what happened in ‘old’ England and how children were treated.
The Time Machine
H G Wells is one of my heroes – his vision and storytelling are part of the reason I read so much, and love science fiction. This book is a great example of how an author can make a seemingly impossible idea come to life and make sense. The adventures held within the book are so real and believable that you forget that there is a time machine involved!
