H1N1 Vaccine: dangerous or not?

82

By SimeyC

**Breaking News**

800,000 flu shots for kids have been recalled due to losing strength.

While in this case it is not dangerous, it is this sort of think that troubles me when new vaccines are rushed out without the full range of tests that are normally done - so far there seem to be no major side effects, but is this luck or not?

WHO's official FAQ regarding Vaccine Safety.

Here's what WHO say about the Vaccine:

  • Outcomes of studies completed to date suggest that pandemic vaccines are as safe as seasonal influenza vaccines.
  • To date, studies do not show harmful effects from the pandemic influenza vaccine with respect to pregnancy, fertility, or a developing embryo or fetus, birthing or post-natal development.
  • The most frequent vaccine reactions in children following influenza immunization are similar to those seen after other childhood immunizations (such as soreness at the injection site, or fever).
  • Because the pandemic virus is new, both non-clinical and clinical testing is being done to gain essential information on immune response and safety.

The whole FAQ suggests that the benefits far outweigh the dangers. Please see link provided for the full FAQ.

Are you going to get the H1N1 vaccine?

  • Already have.
  • Yes - soon.
  • Not sure yet
  • Probably not
  • No way - it's far too dangerous!
  • H1N1? Swine Fly? What's that then?

Disinformation is dangerous

We've all seen the news media reports and know that H1N1 virus (or Swine Flu) can be potentially dangerous - the actual numbers of fatality rates are small, but even with the small risk, is it worth getting the vaccine?

What are the dangers? This hub tries to explore some of the facts and fictions surrounding the vaccine.

Take a look at the 'Fatal Infection' website below - if you believe the statistics, it's barely dangerous when compared to Bird Flu - did you get vaccinated for that? I know I didn't!

“Only Thing We Have to Fear Is Fear Itself” FDR

Concerns about H1N1 Vaccine

Generally with any vaccine, especially an untested one, there are dangers – mostly the benefits will outweigh the dangers, and therefore most ‘high risk’ people should be vaccinated.

Some of the potential dangers:

  • The vaccine contains thimerosal, which contains mercury and has many potential hazardous side effects – however the dosage is very very low and is not expected to be dangerous – in fact, if you research Energy Efficient Light Bulbs, you’ll find that they contain higher amounts of mercury.
  • The vaccine has not been subjected to the normal testing procedures that the FDA insist on and therefore the potential risk of side effects that currently are not known is higher.
  • Same side effects as the Flu Shot.
  • The vaccine (as many Flu type vaccines do) has elements of 'egg' in it - it is produced using egg cultures - so if you're allergic to eggs then you should check with your doctor prior to getting the shot - some doctor's will reduce the shot and give it to you in several doses. There are some egg-free vaccine's being developed - so check with your doctor to see if these are available.

As this is a brand new vaccine it’s very difficult to know whether there are side effects. The only thing I can do is to quote FDR…

“Only Thing We Have to Fear Is Fear Itself”

From my research, reading over 50 different websites, it seems that most experts agree that any side effects will be minor, and generally similar to the Flu Shot.

My best Advice: Talk to your doctor, they are the experts.

H1N1 Vaccine and Pregnant Women

My daughter is pregnant, and initial reports said that pregnant women are at higher risk of contracting Swine Flu and should get vaccinated; days later I read a report stating that pregnant women should not get the vaccine.

Part of the problem stems from information that the vaccine contains thimerosal, which supposedly contains mercury and is blamed for causing autism; on the flip side, pregnant women in general are more susceptible to catching diseases.

Trying to get to the bottom of the problem, I’ve read several articles and talk to many doctors, the gist of their arguments are:

  • The chances of getting swine flu are very low, even for pregnant women.
  • Isolate yourself from any potential areas that can be a threat of contracting the disease (example : stay away from children if possible).
  • The effects of the vaccine are unknown, but like with any medication there could be side effects – however, these are usually limited to a small portion of the people who take the drug.
  • The risk of contracting swine flu is greater as the pregnancy gets later.

So, what do I advise my daughter? She is two months pregnant:

  • Talk to the doctor – they know more about the risks than I do, or for that matter than most Internet websites.
  • Stay away from people who are sick
  • Stay hydrated and eat well – it builds up the immune system.
  • Watch the statistics – if the number of cases is rising – get the vaccine.

At the end of the day it is her decision - she's generally against vaccinations, as am I - but if things get very serious then she will consider it. The best advice I can give her is 'listen to your doctor'.

Vitamin D and alternatives.

There are a lot of people pointing to the benefits of Vitamin D and other herbal remedies; while the benefits of these methods are well documented, like the vaccine there is no conclusive proof that these remedies will prevent or protect against swine flu.

Just like the Pharmaceutical companies will benefit from you taken the shot, the herbal remedy companies stand to gain from the swine flu scare.

The best advice I can offer is to get expert advice - taking vitamins and herbal remedies can be good, but there are potentially dangerous side effects if you have existing conditions.

The Economic Recovery conspiracy.

There are rumors going around that the whole Swine Flu ‘situation’ was blown up out of proportion to stimulate the economy. Essentially, by advising all people to get the Swine Flu shot, the government(s) are stimulating the economy by multi-million dollars.

Just in America, if 50,000,000 get the flu shot, at $20 a shot – that makes $1 billion dollars in additional spending – now multiply this by every country in the world and you’re talking about a multi-billion dollar stimulus.

Is this true? Who knows – and I doubt we’ll ever find out. I am skeptical that this would happen, but you just never know.

What do you think?

I find it amazing they still use Thiomersal when the medical profession has alternatives and knows the dangers of mercury. There are risks with all Vaccines. If I was pregnant there is no way I would allow myself or my child to have any vaccinations containing Thiomersal

Thiomersal is one of those words that is a beast to spell!

Hi Simey! Great info you've given us here.....I in no way am getting this shot!

pgrundy 2 years ago

Great information, calmly presented. Personally, I would go for the vaccine if I was pregnant or if I had young children or a compromised immune system. Here in the U.S. there has been a lot of hysteria surrounding vaccines in general and the Swine flu vaccine in particular, and this hysteria is fueled by some people who have very vocally connected vaccination to autism in children (the risks of infectious disease are far greater), and the fact that when Swine flu hit in the 70s the U.S. government got it wrong and several hundred people died.

This time around, it seems to me the risks of the disease itself cancel out the risks of the vaccine, especially if a second round of infection comes in December here as expected. With each new round the risk of mutation and more serious mortality rates increases.

Sometimes I think the internet is better at spreading misinformation than information. I had Swine flu recently and it was surprisingly debilitating, even though I recovered on schedule. I still feel not 100%. Thanks for a informative hub.

This stuff is dangerous, untested, has heavy metals at 1800 times what the CDC claims is "safe". If it is so safe, why did Obama give big pharma immunity from legal risk? Adjuvant's are used to "enhanse" the immune effect and that is why this is so dangerous. heavy metals, live viruses and adjuvants makes this a combination of poisons to the human body.

If it is so safe, why is the Obama kids not getting the vaccine?

Why was a "state of emergency" declared when we are not anywhere close to what normal flu does on a yearly basis?

How come they put these hugh numbers attributing the deaths to swine flu, and in the same breath say that they have not tested most of the cases to verify "swine flu"? And how many of them took the vaccine?

50% of healthcare professional are refusing the vaccines, so if they are refusing it, why should we drink the coolaid?

Do you know that the "New" healthcare bill has an attachment that reads as "No Child Left Unvaccinated For The Flu" in it?

Who wrote this bill, who gains from the swine flu scare? hint: it was not a politician.

With all of the misinformation by the MSM and government, why would you take a "live virus" vaccine and trust them, take a look at history, governments that force things on the populations have all had alterior motives other than the health and welfare of the people they forced.

I personaly know of two people who took the shot and within 10 days was dead with the swine flu, or some flu. Vaccines are supposed to have "dead viruses" so that the body is not harmed from a live virus while still getting the immune system to build up antibodies to fight the real thing if it tries to enter the body. They are giving you the flu because they are giving you a live virus, that means they are giving you the flu, and it makes the recepient contagious for up to 21 days so it can spread further. Not a smart move! There have also been some reports of the vaccines having the H5N1 in them (bird flu) as a live virus in them, it was reported in the main stream meda a couple of times.

People need to study this stuff, the rabbit hole goes a lot deeper than most think.

It is almost like the matrix, so what color pill will you take?

In the UK last week there was a rise of 78,000 new cases of swine flu in one week alone. So perhaps we should be panicking, except it might help to know that these figures are somewhat dubious. In the UK if we suspect that you have the flu, we are instructed to telephone a flu helpline - we must not go to the Doctor. On the end of the helpline is an operative (not medically qualified) who asks us to identify our symptoms from a possible list. If we answer yes to three question we are instructed to stay at home and a relative collects tamiflu from a central local point. We are now one of the statistics for that month. The trouble is if you say yes to a raised temperature, yes to a sore throat and yes to feeling sick then you are classed to having mad swine flu. These statistics will never be tested for accuracy.

I don't doubt that swine flu exists, I really don't want to catch it and I am deeply sorry about those who have felt terribly ill or even died from it. However, I have to ask the question, who benefits, who stands to gain from all of us panicking and rushing to get an immunisation that is most certainly not either proved effective or proved harmless for a flu that we really have no idea of the true incidence? Not any of us but most certainly as always the Drug manufacturers do

Here is what the World Health Organization says:

Vaccine safety

The experts reviewed early results from the monitoring of people who have received pandemic vaccines and found no indication of unusual adverse reactions. Some adverse events following vaccination have been notified, but these are well within the range of those seen with seasonal vaccines, which have an excellent safety profile. Although early results are reassuring, monitoring for adverse events should continue.

Vaccines for pregnant women

Concerning vaccines for pregnant women, SAGE noted that studies in experimental animals using live attenuated vaccines and non-adjuvanted or adjuvanted inactivated vaccines found no evidence of direct or indirect harmful effects on fertility, pregnancy, development of the embryo or fetus, birthing, or post-natal development.

Based on these data and the substantially elevated risk for a severe outcome in pregnant women infected with the pandemic virus, SAGE recommended that any licensed vaccine can be used in pregnant women, provided no specific contraindication has been identified by the regulatory authority

Barely any information about H1N1 at all, basically just regurgitating basic facts that most people already know.

The Bird Flu is only a concern where people handle a lot of live birds such as China; so no most people in the US where you are from have no reason to have gotten it.

The information I provide is available on the web, and yes it is regurgitated - but I didn't know any of this until I did my own research - I only summarized this. If you listen to WHO and the TV then you would not know the dangers. The point I am trying to make is that the TV and media is making people panic and take the vaccine without thinking. The same thing happened with the Bird Flu and as you point out - it was mostly a concern in China - and yet everyone was advised to avoid birds, etc when the avian flu was supposed to hit the US....

Your daughter needs to learn about what vaccines do to your brain and her babies brain. I work with kids with autism and its very sad, some can't even talk. I don't think that this vaccine is any more dangerous than any other one that goes around every year. I also don't think that the virus itself is that horrible. Statistically speaking, more people die from regular old influenza every year than this particular strain has taken so far. I've known several people that have had it. Some get it worse than others. This is because of immune system health. It's always good for drug companies to push immunizations, why? Because it makes them more money! Fear? Hysteria? The perfect ingredients for a money making endeavor as far as these companies are concerned. Let's all just work on building our immune systems, and staying away from sick people the best we can. Sure, inevitably we will ALL come into contact with these stubborn individuals. Stock up on the hand sanitizer, and dodge the dumb ass's that sneeze in other peoples faces. Maybe even give 'em a little lecture. I know that I've had to say something to a few different oblivious assholes when they've failed to cover their mouths as they sneezed or coughed in my direction. Watch out! I'm out there ready to criticize and embarrass you!

Thanks for a neutral, informative view on this. My physician, who's old-fashioned and a skeptic, never gets the flu shot. He opted, however, to take the H1N1 vaccine and presented me with some stats on local, national and worldwide mortality rates that convinced me in a flash. Both my kids got their first part of the vaccine last week. I am an asthmatic with history of heart disease, so I got the shot last night. No side effects for anyone thus far. My only complaint would be the way the local health department is running these vaccine clinics -- too many people in tight spaces, too much opportunity to spread H1N1, or anything else for that matter, amongst those who are classified as at-risk.

Wishing you health :).

In the beginning, even before it was declared a level 6 pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO), a group of “scientists” were sounding the alarm that this might indeed be the terrifying, deadly pandemic they had been expecting for over half a century.

Naturally, the vaccine manufacturers were doing all they could to fuel this fear and they were quietly making deals with WHO to be among the companies selected to manufacture the “pandemic” vaccine for the world. Being anointed by WHO would guarantee tens of billions in profits.

CBS, to their credit, conducted a three-month long investigation that indicates that we have all been hoodwinked by the governmental “protection” agency called euphemistically, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.34

What they tried to learn from the CDC was just what percentage of the “flu cases” were in fact H1N1. The CDC did all they could to protect this information and only after filing a Freedom of Information request and waiting 2 months did they finally release the data. Now we know why they wanted it protected and why they stopped testing for the H1N1 virus in late July.

The data revealed that in fact very few cases reported as swine flu were in fact H1N1 variant virus. CBS examined the data in all 50 states. What they found, for example, was that in Georgia only 2% of reported cases were H1N1 (97% negative for H1N1); in Alaska only 1% of reported cases were H1N1 (93% negative for flu and 5% seasonal flu) and in California only 2% of reported cases were H1N1 with 12% being other flu viruses and 86% negative for flu.

A recent release from the CDC found that their survey reported that of 12,943 specimens tested from around the country, only 26.3% of cases tested positive for H1N1 variant virus, but that 99.8% of the specimens tested positive for some type of other flu virus, most of which were regular seasonal flu.

The CDC has now changed all data reporting on the flu effects. They did this by stopping viral typing and subtyping and rolled back all previous numbers based on prior data. The new system for collecting data now started on August 30th, 2009.

The only reason I can imagine they did this is that the prior data was clearly demonstrating that the H1N1 variant virus was causing a very mild illness in most people (99.99%) with fewer hospitalizations, fewer cases of pneumonia and fewer deaths for all ages and groups than the prior seasonal flu in past years. This was true for the United States and the Southern Hemisphere, which has gone though the worst of its flu season.

Now that they are no longer typing the virus, they can attribute all cases of pneumonia, hospitalizations and deaths to H1N1, even though the majority of cases appear to be from a long list of other causes. In fact, they can classify many cases of primary pneumonia as caused by H1N1.

As a result of the above, more people are becoming educated about influenza and flu vaccines, especially H1N1 swine flu. Recent national polls have revealed that 30 to 50% in many communities are not planning to get a swine flu shot.

That motherly instict is a powerful thing - my daughter did exactly the same - she makes sure she eats properly, drinks plenty of juices and stays away from anywhere where there is a chance to come into contact with it!

I am a strong advocate AGAINST VACCINATION! Vaccination is an evil thing. My youngest brother many years ago got vaccination against TB and got paralised for life! He could not walk, hardly talk, even eat, somebody (me) had to feed him with a spoon. And he was very heathy before that. I never ever wanted my children or myself get through something like that. Horror of this affected my life for ever. You always have a choise and you have to think: IS THIS RISK JUSTIFIABLE? Is my child going to die for sure if I am not doing vaccination, or is it just a risk I am going to take and I will keep my children well taken care of so in case of getting disease they will be all right? It's not a plague, it's a flu, people, take a risk. How are you going to feel if you'll do it to you child and he will die,how are you going to live with it? My mom could not, she lost her marbles, at least part of them. and it's not a joke. All this propaganda distracts people from economical situation and fills pockets of many people, if you shouil know. USE YOUR BRAINS! THINK!

Conspiracy theorists unite!

It s far more dangerous for you and your family and your community to not get the H1N1 shot. Although this flu has been very mild so far, it KILLS healthy people rapidly.

I understand there are some vaccine risks but those risks are almost statistically zero. For all of you that are afraid of vaccine risks I suggest you stop crossing the road, using air travel, living in an earthquake zone.....

Curious Jen: LOL there's always a conspiracy - I wonder what the conspiracy is behind all these conspiracies!

My only comment is that 'they' warned us there would be hundreds of thousands of deaths - so the vaccine either worked amazingly well - or the pharmaceutical companies made us fear more so they could make far more money LOL!

Thanks for the heads up on this hub. H1N1 is still a very important topic to know your facts about

H1N5 scares me a lot more than H1N1.

Your article points out that all people need to investigate what flu remedies are safe for themselves and their families. You made a good point that there are many alternative remedies that make claims that can't be backed up with clinical studies. It's important to make sure that you do research before choosing the right flu remedy to make sure it's backed up with clinical studies and scientific evidence. Great article!

HerbalScience: thanks - I agree - research is key - don't just accept what the 'media' tells you or advertising tells you!

Since you wrote this hub, there have been some research updates and I believe I have read most of it from the NVIC.org site. The first one is that since they have recommended H1N1 to pregnant women, the percentage of miscarriages have gone up like 700%!! The other one is that they think it may be causing narcolepsy (sp?) in children and young adults.

What gets me is that you never hear any of this from the FDA or CDC! I think they are more afraid of hurting their pocket book than they are concerned for the health and well being of my family. Therefore, I do not trust them.

Thanks for a well written and informative hub!

I am always reluctant to jump on any new vaccine without knowing the long term effects or try something that is very new.
