74Traditional Irish Recipes using Guinness
On a cold winter's night, with the snow flurrying outside, and ice forming on the windows, there's nothing better than to sit back eating a hearty meal; perhaps a great Irish Stew, or a simple pot roast. These recipes have been around for centuries, and for good reason.
Being an experimenter by nature, I like to spice up my recipes - sometimes I'll add non-traditional ingredients and others I'll just change the recipe slightly by adding different herbs - one thing I have found that always improves something like a stew is adding ale or stout. My stout of choice is of course Guinness. It adds a slight bitterness to the meal, but also adds a pleasing richness.
I've created many separate hubs for individual recipes but felt it was time to collect them all toghether in one hub - I will continue to add individual hubs, and therefore update this main hub as I go along!
Important note - as all of the recipes involve cooking, there is NO ALCOHOL content as the ALCOHOL will burn off. The Guinness is only used to provide body and flavor to the recipes.
Enjoy!
Starters
Some of these recipes can be used to accompany the main course, but in many instances I would use them as a starter.
- Welsh Rarebit with Guinness
I've always been a fan of cheese on toast and as a teenager spent lots of time making different varieties; I used different cheeses, added lots of butter, fried it, baked it etc. Eventually after much... - Guinness Garlic Mushrooms
Mushrooms are one of the most underused vegetables in my opinion; they add so much flavor to meals, either as an addition or a side dish. I always used to get Garlic Mushrooms as a starter when I wne out to...
Main Courses
I love hearty food, especially on a cold winters night. Guinness is the perfect addition to many recipes to add a boldness and unique flavor to enhance any hearty food.
- Guinness BBQ Chicken
Sadly BBQ season is over, but I still have my grill ready to go for those mild October evenings. Chicken is one of the staples of a decent BBQ and getting the right marinade is very difficult to do. I've... - Guinness Braised Beef and Cabbage

Summers gone and most grills are winterized; not mine, rain, sun or snow I still BBQ! Beef burgers are the staple of most BBQ, especially for children - so why not add some bold flavor to the traditional... - Guinness Gravy
There's nothing better than Mashed Potatoes, a wonderful roast beef, some green beans and then some rich and thick gravy to cover them all. Over the years I've tasted some great gravies, mostly made by my... - Guinness Irish Stew Made

This week we found ourselves with some Pork Chops to cook for dinner. However, as our oven requires cleaning and anything that we now broil in the oven causes the fire alarm to go off we decided not to cook... - Guinness Pot Roast
I have to admit that I didn't try Pot Roast until I was 30 and had moved to America. Growing up in England, the only way to do beef (in my family) was to roast it, add some roast potatoes and Yorkshire... - Guinness Shepherd's Pie
Most of my recipes I make are based on recipes my mom made. Somehow the wonderful aromas and simple but superb tastes have remained with me long after she passed away, and it is with delight that I continue... - Guinness Spaghetti Meat Sauce
This is another recipe 'stolen' from my mother and adapted - out of all of the Guinness Recipes I've created hubs about, this probably uses the least Guinness - and also is good without the Guinness. The...

Out of all the Guinness recipes I've published on Hubpages, this one has to be one of my favorites. There's something about brownies and milk that is special; it's a treat tha pleases almost everyone. This...
Notes for Vegetarians
Guinness contains isinglass (basically fish gelatin) and therefore Guinness is not suitable for vegetarians, you’d have to replace the Guinness a stout that is suitable for vegetarians.
SimeyC - I am getting the idea that you are a bit of a Guinness man!
My husband is going to love these! He's always experimenting with beer in the kitchen. I can't because I don't drink beer so I wouldn't know what kind to put in what recipes, and he only has so many ideas.
I'm going to show him this now. He'll be so excited. Thanks for the interesting Hub!
I can't wait to try some of these recipes! The only thing I've ever made with Guinness has been Corned Beef and Cabbage and it was simply fantastic! I've cooked pot roast and a few other things with a fine ale or stout, but not Guinness and now after reading this, I'm not sure why...I am sure I'll be referring back to this hub all season long! Cheers!
here's a guinness chocolate cake recipe from this blogsite:
I will have to try a few of these ... well done from a fellow devotee ~!
Good hub, and good advice, will have to try some of these recipes this winter. They will come in handy this winter, seeing how Oklahoma is prone to snow and ice storms.
Franki
Awesome hub! And thanks for the info on Guinness not being vegetarian - I never would have guessed that, so I appreciate the heads up!
Interesting Hub SimeyC, I enjoyed Guinness steak pie in Ireland. I presume you can make the same dishes with Murphy's. That isn't as bitter.
I am looking for the recipe for the Guinness Chocolate Muffin I enjoyed at the Guinness Storehouse a few weeks ago. It was wonderful! I've seen recipes for Guiness Chocolate Cake or cupcakes, but not for the muffins. Can you help?

SimeyC - Isinglass. So that is the answer to my question about why vegetarians shun Guinness. Thanks. Gus
