Final Fantasy XIII: how to beat Primarch Barthandelus
90How to beat Primarch Barthandelus in Final Fantasy XIII
In most Final Fantasy games you will have a recurring enemy; for me this has been annoying in the past as I’ve had to develop several different strategies as the recurrent boss tends to get tougher and tougher as you go along!
Final Fantasy XIII is no exception and there are several recurring bosses. Primarch Barthandelus is by far the worst – you’ll meet this boss in three parts in Final Fantasy XIII and each time this is a very difficult boss.
As this is such a tough boss I’d advise that you make sure you are leveled up as much as possible for each encounter – you’ll have to do some ‘exploring’ to get extra XP along the way – even if you are full leveled up, the battles are not easy.

General Strategy
Encounter 1 - Part 1
- Do not attack the body first – you won’t get anywhere.
- Use Libra (or if possible a Librascope) straight away – each armour section (four in all) will have a weakness)
- Buff up, perhaps using haste on your characters and debuffing the enemies using slow.
- Use your best attacking paradigm (slash and burn, tri-attack or decimate) to do as much damage on the armour as possible.
- Keep an eye on HP and switch to a healing paradigm when required
- Use relentless assault occasionally (usually when on full health)
- Keep an eye on buffs and de-buffs and re-do when needed.
- As you destroy each armour, the rest become tougher – be more careful with your buffs and HP and eventually you should win this part of the battle.
Encounter 1 - Part 2
- This is an extremely tough battle – Hope is really a weak link as he has low HP and Barthandelus really begins to hit you hard in this battle! You’ll find yourself staying in a healing paradigm for much of this battle and will often be hard pressed simply to keep your HP high.
- You’ll be able to a debuff or two – the best one to use is slow – but you really need to keep your buffs up if you can.
- When you get the rare chance to attack (I’d say when all HP is at least 75%) switch to your strongest attacking paradigm – I used relentless attack as soon as I had a chance.
- Once you have staggered him – watch out – keep your HP very high – at least 85% but try and keep it at max all the time – Barthandelus has a really powerful attack that will knock any characters with less than about 80% out of the battle. So you’re going to be stuck in a healing paradigm again.
- This is the one battle where I suggest you summon - many of the others you can get away without a summon, but you really need to do mega damage, especially when he is staggered.
- It’s very tough to stagger him at this point as his chain gauge resets often.
- Maintain buffs and debuffs while keeping your HP high – if you can – use potions so you can keep attacking
- Relentless attack seems to be the way to go when you get the chance – it’ll wear Barthandelus down
- Eventually – and I mean eventually – you will win this battle – it’s a long slog and you’ll get frustrated at the number of times you have to heal and re-buff – but you’ll get there eventually. The key seemed to be the use of a summon during the stagger – you’ll probably only get one or two staggers so take your chances when you get one!
Second Encounter
- Strangely enough I’d say that the first (two part) encounter is harder than this one – you still need to be very well leveled up at this point (which will serve you well when you reach the final boss anyway).
- Barthandelus has a huge amount of HP in this one and it’s one of the longest battles in Final Fantasy XIII.
- Buff up straight away and use slow to de-buff Barthandelus.
- Use your best attacking paradigm (this really depends on the party you have selected) and try nad do as much damage as possible early one.
- Barthandelus will get tougher and tougher as the encounter goes on!
- Like in the second part of the first battle I’d use a summon as soon as you have staggered him.
- You’ll find yourself attacking less as the battle goes on as you concentrate on healing and defending – but when you get the chance – perhaps with HP at 80% or higher for all characters – go on the attack with an attacking paradigm (slash and burn works well as does relentless assault)
- You’re going to find yourself in constant healing mode and you need to keep your buffs up, and where possible debuff Barthandelus – at the very least use slow.
- You really want to haste yourself so that the combination of slow/haste is to your advantage.
- Try and be a little more offensive – not full out offensive so that you can start to build the chain gauge.
- Once staggered – either summon, or use your best attack – tri disaster, relentless assault etc.
- Again go back to healing mode for a while until you can conservatively attack again.
- Keep up this attack method – my preference was to summon during staggers, but doing the max damage you can during stagger is the key.
- It’ll take a long time, but you’ll eventually win this battle as long as you are conservative – heal constantly and take advantage of the stagger.

I killed Barthandelus in 10min 33secs with under-developed characters, meaning I did not once CP grind at all and ran through about 20% of the monsters. I used light, vanille and sazh, light and vanille were healers and sazh was synergist, I also used vanille to debuff the boss, the 3.3 mil health he has is scary at first, but you will learn that you need to buff yourself and debuff him ASAP, so syn/med/sab was my initial para. and after the first stagger I got him down to 1.8mil from 3.3 mil. With com/rav/rav...
after this you shoud quickly heal and buff your group, basically rinse and repeat.. but on the next stag. I used Odin, and he was then left with just over 1mil health, I dint have enough TP to summon him again so what I did was heal, buff, debuff then stagger him, as soon as I staggered him my party was gonna die so I used the "renew" ability it healed everyone, so with full stagger and my party fully healed and buffed, the rest of his hp was cake :) I must say though some of this battle has to do with luck and how quick you are on switching roles at the right time... Maybe this helps..
my method in the second battle was to use van/light/fang, fang with only i lvl in medic to give her cure, start using sab/com/sab to debuff him-MAKE SURE DE-BUFF AND SLOW ARE IN THERE then use rav/com/com to stagger him, then use med/med/med to cure up extremely fast, in stagger rav/com/com gets him takeing 50k plus damage for each hit after a while, took me 5mins 36secs to beat him and he didnt manage to get doom on me
I ran too fast through the game i suppose. Never CP grinded.. Actually never thought i needed to. My strat is working, however i think my dmg is too low cause he cast doom on me around 25% Hp.. Anyway to debuff or avoid that?
I am going to use this!
Light/Szaz/Hope each with upgraded rainbow bracelet for dazeaga - 3rounds SYN/SYN/SYN Light brave/faith, Hope Protect/Veil and Szas Haste/Vig. 2 RAV/RAV/RAV until stag then COM/RAV/COM. MED/MED/MED to heal, rinse and repeat 13:18
To defend against destructo , make sure that you have lightning attack at short range and the other two from long range. Possibly commander + 2 non atk. This way light wont get hit with splash damage that might kill her. After this do phoenix or combat clinic
Thank you so much! I have been struggling to beat this boss for the last week or so. I'm glad to hear that some of us have had some success against him! :)
k, i've tried this boss twice already and im ready to punch my ps3-i swear feel like im playing NES all over again :) anyway the reason im so frustrated is i got soooooooo close i both battles after a long fight just to lose with like the littlest left to go, I probabally should have summoned more towards the end, or the beginning with the hopes of another summon...well here i go again lets hope I make it through this time or my ps3 might not ;)
I used this guide, and the stragtegy here helped give way to a strategy that I suspect may bring people to victory in a better way. I thought defensively, so I thought of using Solidarity (Light: COM Snow: SEN Vanille: MED). Simply attack continously at any part of the armor. Make sure that Snow has Challenge and Mediguard. By using these, Snow can force the boss to attack him, just for him to recover health with a mediguard. And Vanille will heal anyone who's damaged. I recommend having many potions. I had 99, but you may not need to take such drastic measures. If you're the kind that wants detailed info on equipment, nothing is leveld up except for Light's Edged Carbine, which is level 15. Once you have full health, occasionally switch to either Relentless Assault (Light as the COM), Tri-disaster, or Diversity (Light: COM). When you stagger a piece of armor, switch to Diversity so you can deal as much damage as possible to the staggered enemy while still maintaning a decent amount of health support from Vanille. This is a basic strategy, so build more on it in any way you see fit, whther it be to increase character development, use summoning, use buffs/debuffs, use TP with other things such as Renew, etc. Let me know if this helped!
Is there anyway to dispel Doom or avoid it completely? I almost always win and he ends up casting Doom and I... well die.
yea i can deal with the long amount of time it takes to beat him. after i started buffing everyone that one attack was managable but he used doom on me and it just skrewed it all up. i even thought to use my summon for light but when the summon ended i still died.
idk what to do about that. any ideas?
I've been fighting him in his Chpt 11 and doom is a huge problem. The trick is to stagger him and reduce his HP fast so that doom if it does get cast is too late to help. Scoring paradigms should all include a commando. Healing paradigms should be as fast as possible. I frankly don't know how to move the characters around when using auto battle. I'd like to be able to do that per Wig's comment re having light attack at short range and the others at long range. Also i'd like to use ethersol, I have 2 to use but once in battle they don't appear in the technique list - I'll keep trying with all of my characters at level 4 I should be able to get this done. Dang!!
I've had a lot of difficulty with Barthandelus. I've fought him over four times in the first encounter, and have never been able to beat him. Every time, when he's left with about a quarter of his health, he casts doom on my character. The doom meter always runs out before I can beat him. Does anyone have some tips for this?
to tiffany
apparently the boss casts doom if you are taking too long to defeat him. A good idea is to use haste to speed up the rate at which you do damage
Thanks your aritcle.very good.
I've just got up to encountering him today and tried twice... promptly failed halfway through the first time, second time I got him to about 25% of his health meter and he cast doom.
I'd already summoned Odin so that went out of the window as an option.
By the way, the team I'm using is Light/Hope/Fang, mostly because Hope's a good healer and Fang does a decent amount of damage as a COM. Lighting is equally good for me as a RAV & COM but I'm still stuck :(
I'm debating whether to use Sazh perhaps due to him being able to cast haste and/or Snow because of Snow's good SEN role.
Either that or it's back to grinding... happy days :P
But this boss sucks something awful.
I'm still stuck on this boss every since the last week of April. The team I used b4 was light/fang/hope. And I really like hope as a healer but he's not really good as a synergist. Fang is ok, and lighning is ok too. And now I'm using light/vanilla/sazh because sazh is a good synergist and vanilla has very low hp. I tried to look at YouTube videos on how to defeat barthandelus. I'm really on ch9,and this is my 1st time playing a jrpg and a final fantasy game, so I don't really get the point of the game yet. As I was saying, this boss is really hard and he casted doom on me. Is there any way to get rid of it??
for pp who stuck in this boss , follow my method... i use ligh/hope/vanill. and u have 3 paradim... each paradigm u must have one com... i choose com/rav/rav and com/mid/mid and com/mid/sat,, it work well... the problem with that boss is u cant fight too long or it will chargin up the magic...
Noobs
i beat barthandelus after 5 or so tries in the first encounter after every defeat i grinded for cp after i was done killing every monster in the room and i mean every monster i used the cp toward the best roles for my team which was light, hope, snow so really i recommend after every loss grind for cp
I actually beat the boss in the first encounter on the first try. It wasn't hard at all! It took me 13 min and I got a 3 star rating .___. but it wasn't hard XD... it was easier than that stupid flying tank in the air.
I haven't met the 2nd encounter yet :D... but I am optimistic now as you said the 2nd one is easier than the 1st one!
What I did...I used Light, Hope, Fang... I had 6 diff paradigm but mainly used com, rav, med and com, rav, rav
Hope is not weak at all ... well I barely noticed him besides the fact he heals.
I have a question :O ... that revive an ally from KO spell... Hope doesn't do anything when Fang dies *this is after the boss that I discovered*... how can I make him do it?
I did it fine on 3rd try, first I tried light/hope/fang twice, then I realized he was dooming too fast, so I did light/hope/sazh and got the kill before he even casted doom
omg i beat him in like 6-8 mins he is the easiest boss in the game 4 me i always have been able 2 kill him 1st time but im stuck on the last boss :(
The boss used doom on Light. Wtf? I was just about to defeat that son of nugget and he doomed Light? I mean seriously... What the fudge balls?
that doom thing at the end really pissed me off. i was so so so close to killing the fckwit, and he casts doom on me. though i almost had him when i summoned odin, but when gelsalt(idk how to spell it) mode finished i couldnt finish him off fast enough and i died. if theres no way of stopping him casting doom, i need a super fast way to stagger him, but he does destrdo thing on me and it resets. i've been on this boss for three days straight. every day i spend about two hours on it before i get soo pissed off i scream and turn it off. WHYYY IS IT SOOOO FRIKIN HARD!?!?! help? please?
Buffs are good, but not key. I beat this boss quickly after I figured out one of the main strategies. It may seem counterintuitive, but when he starts amping up for the destrudo thing or whatever it's called, either do relentless attack if you have about 75% hitpoints, or do the one with commando, ravager, and healer to heal to full. The more damage you inflict on him while he's revving up, the less damage he'll do to you. I tried spending all of my time healing, but that ended up taking away 80% of my hp or so and it was hard to recover, but if you fight him, not only do you get the stagger bar up, but he also only knocks off 30-50% of your hit points. For fast healing afterwards, I used the two medic strategy, and then switched to relentless attack to stagger him...this took about 3 cycles.
he cast doom, no where does it say that you win if you have doom...grrrr got him over half way down and its taken me forever...not helpful i been doing all of that and it worked til DOOM!
nice job
I used haste,
And pretty much still lost.
I guess i should make someone a sab.
Well i just made it without him casting Doom, guess i'm lucky. I used Light/Snow/Vanill. Pretty much used Rav/Com/Rav the whole time and Rav/Sen/Med once i needed to heal.
Just make sure your HP is full once he starts the destructo-attack then hit him once with a Com then go all out Rav/Rav/Rav to make him mini-stagger. That way the attack will only do 50% damage. Then do the same thing after the attack to stagger him. This way you will take him out pretty fast.
I was lucky enough to beat him using lightning, hope & sazh....set up light as a medic and hope& sazh as synergist. u will need a relentless & a diversity.
I kicked this guy's butt!! After about 2 weeks of frustration....I used Light, Hope & Sazh. Light as medic, Hope & Sazh as synergist....I think it's called all for one. if both are on synergist at the same time, you will buff up to 6 or 7 enhancements on all 3 characters in moments. Save the summon for when Barth is about 33% health left. the key to beating this guy is when he is charging up for destructo....U must keep attacking him vigorously!! if done right, he will fall & make a loud noise....this greatly lowers the effect of his destructo attack
i use lightning, vanille and sazh... my paradigm is :
COM MED COM
COM MED RAV
MED SAB SYN
MED MED MED
i din even use eidolon nor libra
i defeated this guy in less than 5 mins... XP
foul liquid is usefull^^
SABOTOUR IS IMPORTANT!!!
when vanille cast enuf/all debuff spells, the boss's chain bar is alrdy half way full.. and my lightning deals at least 5k dmg (at least 10k when staggered) with normal attack(COM) with the debuffs on it... haste(SYN) is also very helpful cz it speed it up really alot..
The encounter and strategy of this game depict that it is a very exciting game.
I need help!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm getting so pissed I used snow light and hope and usually do rav rav rav to get him staggered quick then I do com med med and I also do com com rav com com med but I usually find myself healing all the damn time someone please help me!!!!!!
I need help!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm getting so pissed I used snow light and hope and usually do rav rav rav to get him staggered quick then I do com med med and I also do com com rav com com med but I usually find myself healing all the damn time someone please help me!!!!!!
First encounter 6.45 seconds. After many attempts using light/hope/fang
And failing miserabley I used light/van/sazh
Paras
Com/sab/syn
Med/med/syn
Rav/Rav/Rav
Com/Rav/com
Stay in the first one as long as possible light will destroy almost anything rather quickly as long as she and her weapon are levelled well, she took at the first three armours without me having to heal because of all my buffs and with Van slowing the big
Guy down, this will work for all amours, then Rav his main body into stagger then swap to com
Para and kick his head in I was dealing 4000 a hit with light and sazh due to buffs and rebuffs
When his stagger is nearlly over have one final attack and swap back to the first para cast buffs then heal then start hitting again he should be using destructo by this point if you mange
To stagger him before he uses the attack it will do
Around 200 hp of damage to each of your characters which I
Think you will agree is nothing swap back to com/Rav/com and finish him
Off in this second stagger I did 200000 worth of damage he never stood a chance, but I'm sure if you repeated this method it would work even after another destructo, having these characters In my party completely took (doom) out of the equation which was why I was suffering my previous attempts haste and debuffs are key
I beat the second time in 17 minutes I used Light fang and sazh or watever his name is
COM/SAB/SYN
RAV/COM/RAV
MED/SEN/COM
COM3x
MED/SEN/MED
keep ur buffs high at first and at least try to have haste on usually it's easier and having foul liquid would help but it's not necessary be very careful cuz I guarantee this isn't the easiest way
I've been stuck on the first encounter since august 2010 and its now may 2011. Please help........
yay thanks for the tips i finally beat him last night with a light, fang, vanille party using
relentless assault rav/rav/com and combat clinic med/med/sen and i only hand to use combat clinic twice because of potions the rest was relentless assault
he hard he use doom on me when he got to the 10000
its too hard i gave up his doom kills me take me like an hr jus to get him half way den h cast doom on me i mean wtf pisses me off i tried all character nothng works for me...
im a bit late ok a lot late but plz use this method trust me it works like hell 1 rpg game ive played only died like 3 times but ive got a way for the 1st encounter only use light fang and vannile this is deffinitly gona work use librascope to see the waknesses now use the following RAV/COM/RAV to deal a lot of damage once your life goes too the orange(danger) use MED/SEN/MED debuff all of them fast as soon as you kill the faces and he does destrucdo(or how ever you say that) keep on RAV/COM/RAV until he hes body moves or jerks he will deal damage but-but not a LOT keep on debuffing until all your elements are used on him this really works i did not even have to use summon and he never even cast doom on me not even once hope this works for u too
I want to try this game as soon as I get a computer that can stand it - thanks for the hub! And the tips!
tanks
I finally made it with Light/Fang/Hope. Key to it is to upgrade your crysarium and use Com.com.med on stagger. Delta attack and mystic to charge staggering.
i never got a chance to win even though i am 11 years OLD >:(
2 every 1 that beat bartendelus i hate u because i cant
Does anyone know of a cheat to stop or get around this stupid "Doom" spell (1st encounter)? I've surfed the internet for ages, and when I found out how to get past "Destrudo" (Yes, you spell it like that.), the first time I used the new strategy this big ugly slug dude (Barthandelus) he used doom and I almost fainted in shock. Help!
ok if you did not kill him like that then try light/fang/hope use libra then make a paradigm off med/sab/syn let hope put protect and shell then attack his faces like hell with rav/com/rav and dont let your life go into the orange zone heal once your in the orange zone and make sure your characters are using life bangles and you will kill him but use libra right in the start ok now check it out man sorry about the 1st one if it never help for you but it helped others see you later porkypine
ohh sorry i had a wrong save actually use light/sazh/vanille start by using com/rav/rav but use libra first then make a paradigm of med/syn/sab wait for sazh to use the EN moves example ENFIRE and stuff then let vanille use her debuffs after that do some healing(make sure your in the GREEN)after that attack like mad this better work because i did this thing again and killed it just like this sorry for the mistake but its fixed now
after you kill one head with your EN moves and start attacking another head switch to med/syn/sab let sazh use another EN move each head has a different weakness and sazh will use his EN moves to kill it faster
Well ei fought him using always only 3 paragrims....with lightning hope and vanille equiped with the accessories which raises your health. well the paragrims were:
Comando\Ravanger\Medic
Ravanger\Ravanger\Ravanger
and for extreme siuations of low HP..Comando\Medic\Medic
it took me A LOT LOT LOT of time with only these 3, but in the end i won!! with no stars though
Hope it's not weak if you equip those hp things on him!!!
Hmm can't seem to defeat him! spent about 30mins on him and I was soo close but he killed me really late in the fight... I think I'll start from the beginning (of the game) and focus on leveling!
What i used to beat barthendulus second form is fang, hope, vannile sab, syn, sab com, rav, com, rav, med, med i was able to deal a million damage on my first stagger but you have to max out your characters moves first for each crystarium and its not possible to learn haste before you battle him you can learn it after and with this strategy you should be able to beat him in a couple staggers make sure you com roles has ruinga because that will help deal massive damage to barthendulus
I forgot to mention you should try having all weapons in there second tier form at lv 15 before battling second barthendulus form
Man this boss was too easy I had lighting fang and hope all I did the while time was com sen med and com sen rav and I never even saw the doom spell. What really helped was I used the 2 boosts prior to the battle which gave a ton of buffs. Also when he does destructo hit him as hard as possible then you will hear him yell and the damage is lowered. I also farmed at chapter 7 for 3 hours and had light hope and fangs weapons maxed with accessories maxed as well. Not hard at all!
i used light, vanille and sazh in chapt 11..... start of with bully and use vanille as saboteur and sazh as syn. then switch to heros charge, light-com, vanille-med, sazh-syn. u also want tri-disaster to stagger him(everyone is ravager) and conscevalence, light-med, vanille-med, sazh-syn.....if u do this properly u can beat him in under 20 min which means u avoid the doom counter
There is no way to get rid of doom but 2 bosses b4 the first battle with this guy I had some trouble with a boss that casted doom but i went to settings and changed the battle speed to slow and it gave me 4,000 count down in doom this it took some time to defeat the boss but it works for the doom part i really dont know how to defeat this guy I hav tried a lot of diffrent paras and still hav died...
Im only 11 and i cant figure this out
I have finaly beat Barthandelus! I used Lightning, Sazh, and Hope. At the begining, use Supernatural to buff up your team. then switch to Diversity with Lightning as your Ravanger and Sazh as your Commando. I attacked the left allite first then the left paldron. Then I attacked the right alitte then the right paldron. stagger Barthandelus a few times till you get his health half way then summon Odin. When he casts destrudo switch to Relentless Assault with Lightning as Commando and Sazh,Hope as your Ravangers. Just stagger him while casting destrudo and he won't deal much damage to your team. After summoning Odin just keep hitting him with Diversity. Hopfuly when he casts doom you will have his health bar down to about this size --. Be careful because at any moment he can cast destrudo and kill you with it. Hint, Hint: use some potions to get your team to ful health then when Barthandelus casts destrudo you will still have very little health left. But trust me on this... it acctually worked!!!!!!!!!!

It sounds like you had way too much trouble trying to fight this guy. ALWAYS CP grind especially at the beginning of Ch. 9 I spent most of my time either using either relentless assault or diversity (Light, Hope & Vanille). Hope is not a weak link at all. Upgrade a silver bangle or give him the tungsten bangle and hes right up there with the rest of the team. I think this battle took just under 15 minutes?
