Final Fantasy XIII: How to beat Orphan
94Boss Battle: Orphan
Well you made it to the end and now must face the toughest boss of them all. Orphan is probably the hardest boss you’ll encounter, and like many bosses you have to defeat Orphan twice. By now you should have decent characters, but even so, you’re going to be heavily tested in this battle, and you really need a high HP to have any chance of succeeding.
General Strategy to beat Orphan
Battle 1 (Form 1)
- Start of by being defensive – you’re going to need a lot of healing, so any of the decent healing paradigms is useful – get everyone back to a high HP level – the higher the better and then you can start thinking about attacking
- Buff, buff and more buff – you’re going to be switching to healing paradigms quite often as you buff your characters – without the buffs you’ll have no chance. You must use shell, protect and haste at least, and probably should use faith and bravery – the more buffs the better.

Try to debuff Orphan while buffing up – deshell and deprotect at least. This isn’t easy, but it does really help.
- Once buffed and healed, go on the offensive with relentless assault – the aim of course is to build the chain gauge.
- Keep an eye on HP constantly and switch to diversity to heal.
- Eventually you’ll fill the chain gauge, so now is the time to throw everything at Orphan – use tri-disaster paradigm to do most damage.
- Keep you HP very high – but try and keep up the offensive – the more damage you do quickly the better.
- Orphan will alternate between two forms and he will use a merciless judgment attack before changing form. This is a very dangerous attack and you really need to ensure you are fully healed and buffed – you should also switch to a strong healing paradigm while this attack is being used.
- In the second form (consummate darkness) Orphan will heal himself, so you’re probably best re-buffing and healing yourself and waiting for the first form (consummate light) to concentrate on attack.
- Later on Orphan will be able to heal and attack at the same time – just keep up the attacks as per the above instructions and you’ll slowly wear Orphan down – like before you must watch your HP and not let it slip too low – use Diversity where necessary.
- Make sure you use potions and items wisely – at times you will be poisoned or silenced and not only will you have to get rid of these ‘effects’ but you’ll also have to rebuff and probably heal yourself.
- Be as offensive as possible but make sure to keep your buffs and HP high – even if you have Orphan staggered, you may need to use this as an opportunity to rebuff etc.
- Be patient, this is a long arduous battle but not too difficult.
So keep everyone’s HP in the green, go full offence when you can, and try to maintain your buffs. Go hell for leather when you stagger Orphan, and you should win out fine. On a final note, Orphan will not attack while staggered, so if you’re in bad shape or your buffs are running out, you may want to pass up the opportunity for damage to heal your party instead.
Battle (Form 2)
Strangely enough, like most bosses, the second battle is actually easier than the first. Some psychological pressure is applied to your leader by placing a doom counter on them, but this doesn’t come into effect if you have decent characters.
- Make sure you are buffed and healed and then use Libra to find out Orphan’s weaknesses.
- Once heavily buffed, switch to the relentless assault and build up the chain gauge – you’ll not do any damage while Orphan is not staggered, so getting the chain gauge filled is important – switch to diversity when needed, the aim again to keep the HP high.
- Once staggered attack as much as possible – use tri-disaster or your best combat paradigm to inflict as much damage as possible – the stagger lasts a long time, so attack as much as possible – keep an eye on buffs and HP and re-do where needed.
- As soon as the stagger ends, go into hyper defensive mode – Orphan will use a rebirth attack and you’ll need to be defensive and heal.
- Rebuff and heal as needed, and debuff Orphan if possible.
- Continue to use the above method and re-stagger Orphan – it should take two or three staggers to defeat Orphan.
Well done - you've done it!!!

I love final fantasy! I have EVERY single game! but I am saving up for final fantasy 13
hes imposable he does an attack that will kill one of you guys period, and if he does it to your leader (and he will at some stage in the fight) your dead!
Use cherub crowns, you can buy em in the outfitters.
well i beat him..took me a few tries but i did
Okay this might help alot all of my characters onther then snow was the only charater with with more that 8k HP and Hope only have 7k. Start the fight in Combat Clinic (Med/Sen/Med)as he will use merciless judgement to start this 98% of your CURRENT HP so it can not KILL YOU.The you will switch to Syn/Sen/Sab get as many buffs as you need boefore switching to Combat Clinic once healed go back to to Premeditation as the boss can be poisioned so wait till your poison takes hold on him once it does make sure your HP is in the green and use Tri Disaster (Rav/Rav/Rav. You wuill beat the boss in about 3 mins 5 stars
thanks for the spoiler.. please don't do that
"Continue to use the above method and re-stagger Orphan – it should take two or three staggers to defeat Orphan." Really?
I only need 1 stagger to kill him, and no I didn't have to do random encounters on Pulse, I just killed every group that appeared in front of me while progressing.
I only used the three spects that are native to each char until the end and focused on them.
For Orphan I used Lightning, Hope and Vanille with Med/Med/Med for the first merciless jugdement and then Med/Syn/Sab for buffs and debuffs, Rav/Rav/Rav for staggering and Com/Rav/Rav or Com/Rav/Med depending on the need for healing.
The final battle was extremely easy for me but thats because I did a crapload of training before I fought the final bosss maybe I shouldnt have trained so much then the battle wouldnt have been so easy lol battle 1 is hard somewhat difficult but battle 2 was very easy I won with Yin Fang, Hope, and Snow
SimeyC: it's not your fault & thanks for the strat :)
I beat him in about 8 min.. Just stay buffed and keep debuffing him in the first shape. The second was really easy, took him on the first stagger! :) I used Fang, Vanille and Hope.. All fully developed.
I just reach Orphan, he is by far the hardest boss of the game. My chars. are at lvl 4 in all they'r main roles and it still killed me, i really considering to go back to Pulse (not sure if i can at this point thought)
Actually the easiest way to beat his first stage is to have a MED/SAB/SAB and just poison the shit out of him.
There are so many final fantasy games out there. My cousin is really into them, and keeps telling me they're great. When I get time I wanted to get started, would you recommend I start with the very first part? Is there one story line that links them all? Or can I just start with the latest game and ignore the rest?
Ummm. not sure where you guys are coming from but beat him with 5 stars on all forms fairly easily. Beat the last stage in 1 minute 15 seconds. I'm curious with all the crystallium upgraded if it would be easier.
The first form it says to heal when he changes form but I just railed into him. He only changed forms twice and took him out.
...are you guys serious...a five stared that bitch with one stagger...too easy for the final boss
Dude, somebody plz tell me how the hell to beat orphan easily, I can't defeat hi
I need to know what characters to use what lvls they should be and what items do I need to use somebody gimme a strategy!!!!!!
When I did it I found that if i maxed my buffs and debuffed him i could get his health down below half in the first stagger when he was in his first form of orphan, just made sure i got it to 999.99% stagger. I had lightning, Hope and fang, with 3x power wrists, 3x weirding glyph, 3x wierding glyph. By that point their cyrstariums were pretty full and i had all their accesories at (*). Their weapons were helter skelter, eagle talon and calamity shaft, also maxed, this was just from game progression, no training. The main paradigms i used were entourage, tireless charge, evened odds and relentless assault (only for first stagger, after that he does damage too quickly). took a few atempts but got it easily enough.
I've played, I tried all your tips...I'm just a geek and don't get it. But thanks for all the help for my feeble atempts :-p
Ok so ummm... I keep getting f#$%ed up by status ailment what am I doing wrong?
i had to psych myself to the fact i would have to repeat this fight a few times...lightning, fang, hope (med, sab, syn) after buff and debuff switch to (rav, rav, rav) to stagger and switch to (com, com, med) bartandulus and orphan form 1 and 2 dead under 4 minutes each....cake fights
I have gone through the game using the official strategy guid and found that when it came to tips on the boss fights it was pants. I have attempted to beat orphan 3 times with no luck even after beating barthandeleus in under 2 minutes easy. i have not realy experimented with accesiories and only dabbled with weapons. My party is lightning,Fang,Hope as the guide suggests with flamberge lvl 38, Glaive lvl 38, hawkeye *. not sure what to equip accesories wise. and find it hard to generate anothe gil to realy make a big impact on them further any suggestions would be really appreciated.
thanks for such useful and wonderful tips
Thx for the tips.
I defeated him finally with Lightning-Hope-Vanille.
Trisaster und Firebird safed my day :)
haha so this is gonna sound retarded, I killed the 1st form in just over 7mins and the 2nd form just under 8mins... but i realised it was because I didn't debuff the boss.. It really helps
your hub is really impressive and full of knowledge
SimeyC: thanks man! I agree! Just can't believe the second battle took me longer than the 1st... I actually killed the 2nd form of Orphan exactly when my doom counter reached "0" The most difficult boss for me though was the 2nd Barthandelus encounter, after numerous times of trial and error, switching party members, weapons and accessories around, finaly got it right, hey do you know by any chance where I can get the song they play in the very last fmv sequence of the game? and how would I get back to nautilus to do all the chocobo stuff, I ran all the way back on cocoon, for a really long time.. And came to a dead end...... blind.... :( thanks for this forum btw, very usefull :)
SimeyC: oh sorry man, wasn't paying attention to the links, for me the game only starts now, I like to completly finish the game, own all the best weapons, fully upgrade stats, complete all missions, explore everything, obtain all the trophies (PS3) etc etc. there's ATLEAST another 50+ hours of game play I rekon but thanks again.
final fantasy 7 is the best game in the whole series
- First Form -
I struggled like hell with one of my tactics but I tried this and it was easy as!
Get Vanille, Fang and Hope, start off with Med/Sab/Syn. Then when your fully buffed and its debuffed, change to Rav/Com/Rav and plow it into a stagger. Then go all out and if your doing it right you should get it down to about 50%. Then just repeat but make sure your health is alright.
Use summons if you need to replenish all your health at once.
Try to poison it aswell.
DEBUFFING HELPS A HELL OF A LOT! lol
- Second Form -
just beat the shit out of it, same as before really... Pretty simple :)
This boss actually isn't too hard, I had a lot harder time with some of the Eidolons, mainly Vanille's.
Orphan was not the slightest bit hard. You guys just need to train
Lightning, Hope, and Vanille. Use Tri-Disaster (3 ravagers) to stagger, Once staggered use Relentless Assualt (Light as commando, other two ravagers), Salvation (3 medics) to cure, Evened Odds (Light-medic, Hope-synergist, Vanille (saboteur) for debuffing. Also Diversity (Light-commondo, Hope-ravager, Vanille-medic) is useful if you want to heal while attacking. Also I had Ultima Weapon on Light and Malboro Wand on Vanille which improves her debuffs. I hope someone finds this helpful
i used weapons that were upgraded to 2nd tier, fang(com), lightning(rav), and hope(rav/med) and beat this easily havin fang with the most hp at only 7000...hope had around 5800...i switched to evened odds right before staggering orphan to deprotect and deshell and buff myself and i was hitting for 99,999 a hit shortly after staggering him...best advice...make sure you have a good setup...personally i spent most of my time com rav rav, then sab med syn and only used medic when i was below 3.5k hp
You wuill beat the boss in about 3 mins 5 stars. Joshua posted this in case you didn't see it but his strat helped me but he didn't go into complete details so here it goes, you want to use Camille as your leader and what you want to do is start off as 3 medics to heal yourself after he uses merciless judgement and then switch to Sab/sen/syn vanille being sab fang being sen and hope being syn, to buff and debuff, what I did was debuff until his stagger gauge showed 117 and then switched to tridiasaster untill I had him staggered then I would use rav/com/rav or rav/com/med depending on health but you can always switch after health is up and if your characters are decent you'll get him down to about 3 and a half mil or 4 mil and something which isn't bad, but just repeat that and use summon or renew if you need to and as far as acceceries I used something that increases the resistance to death which can be bought at outfitters, and I used health acceries on hope, one increased health by 840 and the other by like 400 and I used two poverty circles on fang and health boosters on vanille and as for the second fight you do pretty much the same thing it's very easy
The boss does seem to be pretty easy, although I have had merciless judgement kill me when I'm fully buffed w/ full health
I just did this first time. Used Fang, Hope, Light started with Sab, Syn, Med, when i was buffed up switched to Relentless ass. It went into stagger, and that was that.
Merciless judgment doesnt kill you, i believe it takes a percentage. correct me if im wrong.
I have light , fang, hope all upgraded in their 3 main jobs fully. I am simply not doing the damage that people are posting about. Light has ultima weapon and the others have a crap weapon. does weaps make that much of a difference, i wanna beat him in one stagger.
without a doubt the hardest boss in final fantasy!!!
Thanks so much for your article, I would not have been able to beat Orphan without your help.
tried it three times in the end. poison saved me. used lightning, vanille and hope. started with med/sab/syn and then changed to tri disaster when i was buffed and so was he. just switched to med/med/med when he was about to use the judgment move which reduces me down to hardly any health whatsoever.
Just killed him. took me like 3 tries. If you dont worry about stars and just want to win, only heal when he's in his dark form. the thing where his tail shoots status ailments and debuffs at you. try to keep at least 2 meds active for this form. the other one being sen for raised defense and mediguard. dunno what happens when he's in that form but he came back to light with way less hp then when he switched to dark. beat on him a little more, he switched back to dark, i started healing, and before i knew it the battle was over in the middle of one of his attacks with me as the victor. his second form is a piece of cake, build towards a stagger, heal when needed, once staggered i didnt use tripple rav, i used com com rav to knock it up into the air and juggled it to death. weak second form. my party was light, fang, vanille. with everyone's main 3 crystariums maxed
Definitely one of the easiest bosses in Final Fantasy. Not one of the hardest. Ultimecia is one of the hardest
I beat him on the second try using the start retry then equipped Lightning (my leader) with 2 cherib crowns then started off with combat clinic. After his first attack you want to debuff him ASAP. It REALLY helps to have him de-protcted and have a strength of close to 2000. Mine was like 1901, anyways, de-buff him and have at it, making constant switches to the Combat clinic for quick healing. All-in-all takes about what feels like 20 minutes.
I'm FULLY loaded. Weapons maxed. Crystarium totally maxed, but I can't beat Orphan. I seriously want to tear all my hair out!!!
Been using buffs and debuffs... GAH!
You know when he is staggered in his second form, if you use Vanille's Death spell, and it connects, he can be defeated instantly? It can connect, I've seen it done.
YES weapons do make a difference. Unfortunately, I plowed through nearly 40 hours of the game before realizing this. I had not sold the stuff you could sell for a premium, and not paid much attention to the shops. They ARE there for a reason, and help a lot if you use them correctly.
i have noticed that the merciless judgment attack get you to about 5% hp from full health,no matter what is your max hp.
best thing is to go with salvation (medx3)/combat clinic (medx2+sen)but that doesnt mean you dont need hp at all!
make sure your chars have extremely high hp (i tried it the first time with snow with 9300 hp) so you could have a chance of staying alive ^^
guys iv been trying this guy for a few days now and its really annoying me how he used merciless judgment but i survived with lightning on 2 hp hope was dead:( and fang still had 102hp i used renew full hp and relentless assualt and staggered him he died but used progenitiol wrath and for some reason fang hope and lightning all did their special all at the same time and i owned him but all my characters had max crastarium max all roles
Finally beat Orphan 1 (and the rest). Key was poison - thanks for the advice! Vanille/Fang/Hope worked. Need to be able to control Sab to cast poison quickly and reliably (even then it takes a little while). Can't believe Vanille worked for me. She really isn't all sunshine and rainbows!
I'm really having a hard time understanding why people have trouble with this boss. To me, it was harder making the transition from chapter 10 to 11, when you first reach pulse.
I used a battle party of Lightning/Hope/Vanille and really had no issues. I never upgraded their weapons to the ultimate weapon.. and I didn't max out extra roles either. I just made sure that each tree for their original three jobs were maxed. Past that, I gave Hope a lot of HP boosting bracelets, and the same for Vanille. Lightning had 9000ish hp, Hope had almost the same and Vanille had about 8500.
The stat was simple and straight forward. Buff up, work on staggering the boss, swap to 3 healers just after the judgement, rinse and repeat. I didn't try to KO the boss fast, I just used a nice and steady pace. This strat even worked with the 2nd, timed fight.
I thought the game was fairly easy for the most part.
Debuffs are key deprotect and poison are the best stagger once and then unload by that time orphan should stop using the judgment attack and the debuffing tail heal the damage stagger and unload took me 3 mins 15 seconds
Poison was definitely the solution! Had a real hard time beating Orphan 2, but casting poison on him with Vanille as party leader (so you can cast poison x5) resulted in a quick victory.
Tips And Tricks:
2nd Barthandelus Battle:
The Second Barthandelus Battle Is Really Easy.....
But At Least Make Sure That 2 Of Your Roles Are At Level 4
If You Have Use Them Or Just Change My First Paradigm For Hope To Synergest.
I Used Fang/Lightning/Hope
Paradigms:
Sab/Com/Med or syn
Sen/Med/Med
Com/Com/Med
Com/Rav/Rav
Com/Com/Rav
Com/Rav/Med
Use The First Paradigm As A Debuff/Buff Or Heal Session
Once About Three Debuffs Have Been Placed On To Barthandelus You Will Then Want To Heal Up Using The Second Paradigm Before Heading Into The Third Paradigm To Stagger Him.Then Use The Third To Heal While Giving Damage Before Jumping Into The Fourth Paradigm. Stagger Him Twice Really Fast And About Half His Life Will Be Gone. Once His Big Head Comes Through Make Sure You Neva Let You Life Drop Below 50 Percent And Keep Up The Attackign And You Should Win
Tips And Tricks:
Orphan:
Orphan Is Really Easy.
In This Battle It Is About Life And Attacking.
You Will Want To Start Of Healing Of Course!!!
Then You Will Want To Jump Straight Into Buffing Up And Debuffing Making Sure You Have A Medic To Help Keep Your Life Up. Use Relenless Assault To Stagger Him The You Will Want To Keep Up The Assault To Takeaway At Least Half Or Over Of His Life. After Taht Heal Up And Head Straight Back Into Staggering Him Straight Away......
Once He Is Staggered You Will Want To Attack Him Widly And Make Sure About Ur Life Till He Dies Simple And Easy
It took me quite a few times to kill it but that's only because he can cast the instant death to my party leader. You need to buy the crown from the shop if you haven't got one. In fact, I bought 5 in the end. 3 for my party leader and one each for the others. I use Light (leader), Sazh and Vanille and have the follwing paradigm. I have maxed out their lead role on the first go.
Med, Syn, Sab
Med, Syn, Med
Com, Rav, Med
Com, Rav, Rav
Com, Com, Med
Com, Com, Rav
Although the strategy says buff and debuff, the most essential thing really is you have Haste and Poison him. Don't waste valuable attacking time for debuff and buff for eveything else. Strategy is simple. Start with second model coz he will use his judgement. In fact just go to 2nd model when he use judgement. Also use 2nd model when he use his spell to debuff you as one of them can silent all your character and you can't move!
Switch between 4th and 5th depending on your HP. When he staggered go to the 6th and 7th again depending on your HP. Try to stagger before he switch coz he can reset his stagger. Repeat and you should beat him.
When you use Light as Medic, use the spell Cura as this heals everyone up and Vanille will pick up the rest.
Apologies, I meant this on my 2nd paragraph
Switch between 3rd and 4th depending on your HP. When he staggered go to the 5th and 6th again depending on your HP. Try to stagger before he switch coz he can reset his stagger. Repeat and you should beat him.
beaten in 1:18
OOOoooK!
So i just got too orphan after a whole 2 day sitting to complete the game.
But every time i come close to victory He uses that
attack that kills you in 1 hit :l
Im so frustratd right now
i turned off the game and came here for advice
im using Hope/Fang/lighting.
Not all my crysterium
How Come I seem to be the only one getting instant KO'd by a pregatorial wraith? I must be slow I have no idea to get pass this move
If anyone is looking for a strategy to beat orphan i suggest Rob p's stratedgy i had been trying for months to defeat it and did it first go on the back of rob's advice thank you rob and enjoy the ending all =D
I kept getting killed by Orphan 1st form for about 3 days. Progenetorial Wrath kept wiping out my party leader. I bought 1 Cherub's Crown and upgraded to Seraph's crown * for party leader.
I died a dozen times with Fang/Snow/Vanille (picked for highest HP) then beat him first time with Light/Hope/Vanille (seemed an illogical group because of low HP but it worked!).
The trick for me was to max buffs and debuffs then use tridisaster and relentless assault (with med/med/med for after his big attack). This meant I could kill him on the second stagger so only had to survive one Progenatorial Wrath (maxed out crown only gives 60% prot I think). Previously I'd die on about the third Wrath attempt.
Second form was ridiculously easy! Staggered very quickly after buffing, then killed him on the first stagger. Since I didn't die, I don't really have any advice - I think if you manage the first form the second won't give any trouble.
Orphan was one of the hardest bosses that I have faced in final fantasy games the tactic's I used were (Lighting, Hope and Vanille)and the paradigm's I used were
1) COM,SEN,MED
2) COM,MED,SAB
3) COM,RAV,MED
4) COM,RAV,RAV
5) COM,MED,MED
these tactic's will defeat orphan in under 10 mins per form.
I don't know how much variable difficulty there is going on here, but I'm playing with fang/hope/light maxed crystariums and with two ultimate weapons, and I can't do half the damage implied here, even staggered and then in relentless assult. The first Orphan form is still kicking my butt. I can't keep up with the buff/debuff/heal/damage cycle well after halfway, and when I get him down to 1/3 I have to do so much maintenance work I can't barely keep the damage ahead of his own healing. Eventually he manages to take me out with a death spell typically, and I even have the Cherub's Crown on! I didn't have much trouble with any other boss in the game. Perhaps I just have miserable luck tonight. ;) I'll have to try the poison technique tomorrow, I grew tired of retrying.
Ah, well then, yeah. Switched fang for vanille as leader, focused more on sab and poison before switching to tri disaster to stagger and thrash, and it was a cakewalk after all - completed first time (four star, not five, though I'm sure I could fix that :)). So yes, leading with a sab and poison makes a very big difference in the damage you can do over the course of the battle. :)
It's not so much that he's difficult
He's just very time consuming.
What you do in general is quite easy, took me three tries
[First time I only had about 300,000 more to go - since I have fully maxed roles on everything at this point and Genji Gloves it was only a matter of one Highwind from Fang
But since I was poisoned and he used his Unmerciful Judgement, I died v.v]
Second time went pretty smoothly until He decided to instant kill my leader..
And finally the third time I decided to just go all out and attack him because at this point I was angry xD
I believe the hardest boss in this game would be Mission 51 if I'm not mistaken: Attacus
And from all the FF games, I would say Ozma [the optional boss in FFIX - my personal favourite game] is the hardest boss
Though like all bosses, with preparation and strategy: They;re all easy (:
The best way to beat the orphan without the shel is putting hm in stagger and use death
I wont go into a deep explanation of how I completed the fight, but I managed to do it on my first try easily enough, its just a matter of being very familiar with the paradigms and knowing when to switch.
Pro Tip: Bring up the Paradigm menu after you've queued your healing and watch your character to finish their cast before switching. Also switching Paradigms when your leader is doing an attack in mid-air removes that annoying 2 second wait to watch the characters switch into their new roles.
There Paradigms I used were:
COM COM SYN
Strike Team
COMs attack separate targets while SYN supports with enhancements.
COM COM MED
Tireless Charge
COMs attack separate targets while MED supports with healing.
COM RAV RAV
Relentless Assault
COMs and RAVs focus on taking down one target at a time.
COM MED SAB
Scouting Party
SAB weakens opponents while COM attacks them and MED heals the party.
SEN MED MED
Combat Clinic
SEN protects two MEDs while they concentrate on rapid healing.
SEN MED SYN
Protection
SEND defends while MED heals and SYN focuses on strengthening the party.
COM COM RAV
Aggression
RAV and one COM attack a common target while other COM attacks its own.
RAV RAV SAB
Smart Bomb
RAVs combine their attacks while SAB weakens dangerous opponents.
im just mad that i never got to upgrade to tier 3 weapons.. and that I could beat the game without doing so.. ff7 was much better...
Good luck everyone : D, i haven't beat him yet, anyone have an idea of what weapons and paradigms i should you for Lightning(leader),Sazh, and vanille?
sorry, I went a bit mad with my last comment! :\
anyway, this is HARD
the easiest boss of all time has to be FFX. I forget what he was called but it was like Tidus's dad inside of sin or something.
He casted Curaga which restored 9,999 health like every 2 or 3 turns. All you had to do was caste reflect on him and he would heal your party while you wailed away t him.
But this is pretty easy though. I died a few times until I found the right combination after which it was a cake walk.
Used Fang/Light/Vanille. Start as sent/med/med so that you can immediately heal up after the first big attack. Then go sab/med/syn to buff and debuff. DEBUFFING IS REALLY REALLY IMPORTANT. Try to get atleast deshield and imperial (spelling?) Then Hope wait till hope gives Fang and Light Enfire (or some elemental dmg) and Bravery. Then go relentless assault to get his meter up switching to sent/med/med when necesarry.
Once he is staggered go com/com/rav and you should get his health atleast halfway down. Repeat this again but a bit before staggering him....about 350%, summon bahumut and you should be able to nearly kill him with a bunch of attacks from Fang and bahamut followed by his Triangle Attack.
are all final fantacys have tidus in them
FUnny how nobody mentions his technique that removes the stagger you've almost maxed out - hollow...something. If you want to explain something you got to give all the details.
I beat him with Fang, Light and Shaz with fully upgraded Prime trees. (for fang that would be COM/SEN/SAB)
Gears on them were following.
Fang: Blade Lance, Adamant Bangle, Power Glove, Rune Bracelet.
Light: Ultima Weapon, Weirding Glyph, Imperial Armlet x2
Shaz: Sirius Sidearms, Imperial Armlet, Power Glove, Watchman's Amulet (Gives an extra 30% Buff)
Other Items used were: 1 Elixir and 2 Librascope
Paradigms Used: (Fang/Light/Shaz)
SAB/MED/SYN (Evened Odds) (Active)
COM/MED/RAV (Diversity)
COM/COM/COM (Cerberus)

I keep putting 2 crowns to avoid the death and the orphan still takes me (the leader) out. What gives?
Disregard my last post, I just beat the game. Yipeeee!!! It came down to using deprotect, deshell and curse with Lightning, Vanille and Fang. It was a crappy ending though. :(
Thanks SimeyC. I'm now working on completing all 64 missions but I need to gain more hp first especially for Hope and Vanille.
I think no matter how pro someone can be,it boils down to abit of luck too it seems. The boss just love to cast instant death on my leader and it seems to have 100% chance all the time.ZZZZZz.Really irritating especially when it is down to its last few hp and this happens.
Jam : That's not true. I had this same belief but the trick is to use "Deprotect, DeShell and curse" with Vanille. This helps a great deal because you'll see how fast the HP drops for Orphan once you start attacking and get that chain gauge to 99.99%. Oh and make sure you equip two cherub crowns on your leader or just 1 will also do.
How was this boss hard really? I only did like 10 side quests and no grinding whatsoever, I actually skipped several trash packs whenever I could cause I was getting bored near the end so none of my talent trees were maxed out yet. Honestly the trash packs in Orphan's Craddle were way way waaaaay harder then the boss himself, I think that says a lot.
HP isn't as important as people make it out to be here. The boss can't gib you, he does like 98-99% of your current HP or something, a bit like the demi ability's in FFX, the more HP you have when the attack hits, the more dmg you take, but it can never kill you. So you don't need huge amounts of HP. You just need to be ready to heal the dmg up using combat clinic (sen/med/med). If your chars are healed you use ruthless for some quick debuffs and then just burst using com/rav/rav or rav/rav/rav. And make sure haste stays up, easy game.
And the second time around you have fight him with the doom counter... he's even easier. All you need is one stagger if you do it right, make sure he's got deshell & deprotect on and buff your chars with haste alone. Other then that you burst. He went down 2/3 into his first stagger over here. Most of Snow's attacks were hitting for 99.999 so no need for limit breakers or anything either.
I played Snow as leader + Vanille & Hope. I did have Battle Standard, Marlborro Wand and Eaglethorn maxed out which does make for quite some extra dmg but that's it.
I am at the final boss for FF13 now, i have oer 7.5k hp with every charactor besides of course hope.. My main battle team through-out the game has been Lightning-Sazh-Vanille.. i see this as a better option then going with hope, mainily because Sazh has more health and more Magic bonus. I was planning to start off with med-syn-sab and then continue with all of the advice of switching between healing and attacking.
I was at 1st a little worried because every person i have talked to, or heard about has been using lightning-vanille-hope, or fang-vanille-hope. i could be wrong. but i just dont see hope as a great use..
anyways, all my charactors are maxed out for their main 3 talent trees.
So, the question remains at do i need fang or snow as sen? and, should i switch my team, go back and ugrade so that hope can be in my party?
Wow great hub here. I did not see you as the Final Fantasy type. I haven't started this one yet. Still beating Zelda on my DS.
Chris proceed with fang as your sentinel, because I find that she has a stronger defense than anyone else. She also acquires more techniques in this paradigm than anyone else. Oh and hope is awesome for me. I find that hope acquires quite a lot of magic points than everyone. So he casts curaga for instance very quick. I use lightning, hope and fang. Sazh's abilities isn't that great to me, so most of the time he's on the bench. :-)
you do know it isnt really that hard. If you want a hard game go for ff12's Yiazmat boss, 55million hp ;)
the instant death in his first form can be countered by the cherub's crown in b&w outfitters. buy that, or a couple, and stack them onto your party leader. u'll be way better off then
Final Fantasy 12 had the hardest bosses, Yiazmat and hell Wyrm
hey, this page really helped me out, thanks every1 :D
I beat him in half a stagger meter you scrubs.
omg i cant beat him. he keeps using the instant kill ability on my guys and keeps debuffing them and putting on the debuffs so they cant attack or cast. is there any way for me to prevent this? im using sazh vanille and snow all of their main roles are maxed
Well my chars (Lightning(leader)snow and vanille were with 7k 9,6k and 7k at the 3 original paradigms full at each one.But i didn't use buffs on myself until now... i will try this. Thanks a lot for the tip ;)
all my chars have like 8-9k hp but snow has like 10k and i still cant beat him i wipe him in the first phase but when i get to the second i get him to about 700k hp and he 1 hits my party leader then its game over it is proper getting on my nerves lol
once defeated orphan are u able to do the whole story mode again with the same stats as before..im trying to figure out how to but i cant..
ok, he makes this sound so much harder than it is, if u start with light (rav), vanille (sab) and sazh(syn) (all with about 8000/9000 health), in the guerilla paradigm, u can buff ur whole party with haste/protect/etc and debuff orphan with deprotect/deshell/imperil. light's rav at the time will start the chain gauge, once debuffs are done, chances are ull have enough buffs to boost u significantly, and enough health to switch straight to tri-disaster and completely fill the chain gauge, staggering him, then switch to relentless assault (light- com) and use light's launch to stop him from attacking. if u should somehow lose too much health at any point, go for hero's charge (com/med/syn), and if u feel u need more buffs, go for ruthless (com/rav/syn). and if u are really struggling with health use perpetual magic (med/med/rav). with this strategy i killed orphan in less than 2 mins, 5 stars and only had to use a paradigm with a healer once, and killed orphan during the first stagger. easy!
Here's my stategy for Orphan forms one and two. Make sure your characters stats are high. The party best for this is Lighting(Leader) Fang and Vanille. Start the secind battle (Orphan 1) with MED/MED/MED wait till you have all your HP then switch to SAB/SAB/MED for Orphan will continue to attack you while debuffing him. Then switch to SYN/SYN/MED and buff up. Then switch to RAV/RAV/RAV and stagger him. Keep attacking till you get to 850%-999% then switch to COM/COM/COM then. When he uses Merciless Judgement switch to MED/MED/MED quickly and repeat this strategy you should be him in 3-5 mins.
For the second form start with SAB/SAB/MED to debuff then RAV/RAV/RAV to stagger once high enough switch to COM/COM/COM then repeat this strategy and he should be done in 1 min then you can get 5 star rating.
I beat his second form really easily, took me one stagger to do it. Pretty Happy really must of done something right with my party.
just beat orphan after a long rest from playing since i bought the game used lightning, vanelle, and hope. (med, med, med) (med, sab, syn) (rav, rav, rav) worked out great beat 1st phase in like 8 mins 2nd in like 5. deff hardest fight in game had some trouble with it since i dont have people maxed in like any of the crystelurem but still got it done thanks to some of the info gathered from here great help thanks alot
didn't even think i was particularly good at the game and i just finished orphan second form in 4:21, really disappointingly easy considering i've never even taken down one of the big tortoise things.. hahah still fucking love ff
the two fights were well worth the hassle for the end cinematic: best ending to a game ever :D
"This strategy should easily finish off Orphan in 1:00 to 1:30 minutes, enough to get 5 stars and the Superstar Trophy/Achievement. Lightning should be the main party leader along with Fang and Hope and should be equipped with a maxed Tetradic Tiara giving her Protect, Shell, Veil, and Vigilance. Fang should be equipped with a Blessed Talisman to give her Faith. That should make Hope's role as Synergist easier and quicker. The party should start out with Guerrilla (RAV/SAB/SYN). Orphan uses a move that can remove Haste if the characters are too close, so by being Ravager the party can stay away and quickly fill the chain gauge. Once Hope has buffed the party with at least Haste, Faith and Bravery, and Orphan has at least three debuffs, the party should switch immediately to Relentless Assault (RAV/COM/RAV) or Tri-disaster (RAV/RAV/RAV) and stagger him. Once staggered, the party should switch to Aggression (COM/COM/RAV) and keep pummeling until Orphan is dead."
I found this strategy on Final Fantasy Wiki, and even though I didn't have the proper objects to equip, this worked great. No maxed crystarium, low HP, and it worked. Great ending!! :D :D
I can't see how anyonne founnd this hard, especially the second form, I killed him in one stagger and didn't even max out my Crystarium's... at all.
I used Lightning/Fang/Hope mainly using the paridigms delta attack, mystic tower, combat clinic, even odds and relentless assault. I only had to level 4 crystarium's maxed for each character and the one other half done roughly, the rest were just level 1.
I had more problems with some regular battles lol.
I have tried at least 5 times now.. arrgh! I just don't understand what to do when your characters can't move (caused by silence or something). Should I use items to remove them? Pleeease answer! :) You are of a great help everyone!
Are u sure the game goes on indefinetely? i have defeated orphan twice and noted that the game ends after the last cutscene!!even after saving, when i load the game,it loads to before i defeat barthundelus!
btw,i hope this helps!
After orphan does the merciless judgement thing, heal your players then turn to evened odds(using fang-sab,vanille-med,hope-syn).receive the buffs and make sure u cast deprotect, deshell, slow, curse, imperil and poison!then turn to relentless assault and stagger him quickly!his hp should now be under half!if he has turned dark, turn to diversity and stagger him before he debuffs the hell out of you!once staggered he will turn light again!take your chance and finish him off!!however after the first stagger he will begin using techniques that could finish you off in a blurr
nb:my characters werent too developed coz at the begining i skipped quite a few fights!their hp ranged from 5100-4700
This bo i imple just keep protect hell and enfire on the party. Keep orphanlowed and imperiled. He'll be done in two tagger. If you arre dying to eay you need to fill you cp'.
Thanks For The Tips Med,Med,Med Rav,Rav,Rav, Med,Sen,Syn And Relentless Assault Did The Job Perfect. I Thought Fang Was Going To Die Then A Second Fight Came SMh
Great tips! Much appreciated.
Orphan is very difficult yes, but I'd still wager Sin was the hardest boss in any Final Fantasy (Unless you spent your whole life leveling up)
Why don't try attacking the boss as a commander then tr-disaster all (ravagers) for fast stagger rate then diversity if low hp (healer then commando and ravager or medic and 2 ravager),if staggered then cerberus all(commando)
but agreed with defensive mode with the debuffer for more damage
note: commando's role is for easy staggering once hit you can now switch to ravagers for the bashing!
Fun level= 0
As much as I would like to beat this game, I refuse to devote myself to grinding through another Final Fantasy. I made it to this fight and I absolutely hate how much time you actually have to spend buffing while Orphan stacks up debuffs on you. Then I watched my party die at 30% because he silenced me, then refreshed the silence until I was dead.
Btw 99% of the post on this page look like whoever was typing them was wearing a blindfold.
I can beat Orphan in less than 10 minutes.
Don't worry about buffs, just get haste on all characters.
Use Vanille as Leader, then Lightning, and Hope.
Paradigms are..
Med/Med/Med
Med/Med/Syn
Sab/Med/Med
Med/Com/Med
-Heal after the first Merciless Judgement
-put on haste on all characters
-use vanille and cast poison as much as you can
-once poison hits, go med/com/med and keep HP high
-switch back for poison when it wears off.
poison over and over again.. does 1/7 damage every time you use it. when orphan has a slither of health left, just hit him with summon or med/com/med
GG
orpahn was easy for me the key to beating all ff games is to not avoid any fights ever. the grind to getting ur characters leveled up is the only way to ever win. it sucks fighting everything but thats what i did and i beat him easily second try. judgement got me and killed as soon as i started the first time. also you cannot beat him without using buffing dont worry about debufff just keep ho full and buffs on and build stagger bar
Poisen is amazing, all im gonna say
Im sorry guys but this game was just way to easy for me....Compared to a couple of the other Final Fantasy Games it had a better plot and crystarium was great but the game itself was easy
This advice is stupid, the tri-disaster is the best paradigm to build up a chaing gauge (Ravs build up chain gages faster than anyone) but it is not good once the enemy is staggered because Coms do more damage to an enemy than Ravs, even accounting for deprotect, deshell, bravery and faith (Coms can consistently hit the 99,999 mark with Orphan when fully buffed, while Ravs stay around 30,000 damage even if the best buffs and debuffs are on). Relentless Assault is a stupid paradigm, it does less damage than Com + Com + Com or Com + Com + Med once the chain gauge is built up and the enemy is staggered, and it is pointlessly slower at building up a a chain gauge than Tri-disaster (the meager damage added by having a com while you stagger an enemy is worthless compared to the value of staggering the enemy quickly with three Ravs, speed is key in this battle). Coms barely add to chain points. Might as well do two Ravs and a Med rather than two Ravs and a Com (two Ravs and Syn or two Ravs and a Sab might be interesting).
For this battle I used Lightning, Fang and Hope (my strongest characters by far, with the possible exception of Vanille (I couldn't get Sazh and Snow to be good enough at magic, or even strength to be useful, they are basically HP towers, high HP helps nothing in this battle though, you want high strength and magic for attacking and healing and a good Sab and Syn). This is also the first battle in a while where you really don't need a sentinel in a while (I was using sentinels to just stay alive, even through Barthandelous's last stand, but once you hit Orphan, is merciless judgment attack makes sentinels pointless).
Paradigms
Syn + Syn + Syn (to buff at start, or quickly)
Rav + Rav + Rav (to build up chains)
Com + Com + Med (to attack and heal once staggered)
Com + Com + Rav (to attack once staggered if healthy)
Med + Sab + Syn (to do a little tuning up)
Med + Sab + Med (to heal and keep up chain)
You can beat him by building up his chain 3 times if you are buffed and he is debuffed a little. And you have to beat him quickly or he gets impossible.
The final form of Orphan is super easy. he keeps knocking out your buffs, but if you use Syn Syn Syn and build up some buffs, (especially haste), then Rav Rav Rav to build up his chain he becomes vulnerable. Then just use Com Com Med and Com Com Rav to kill him. It may take two staggers if he knocks out your haste buff, but you'll be way ahead of the doom counter as the author notes.
The author was correct that the key to these to battles is buffs and debuffs (I would add speed, focus on building up buffs, chaing gauges and health as quickly as you can whenever you need to, also consider Com + Com + Med).
Before continuing the story, I had actually decided to go back to pulse through a portal and do some missions - mainly for fun an exp, getting the fun-to-ride chocobos, etc.
When i took on Orphan after that, i was extremely shocked (almost disappointed, to tell you the truth!) to beat it in like, 1-2 shots... O_o There were some missions on the Aechylte plains thar were much harder..
So guys, just go train a bit and that boss will be a breeze!
My strategy didn't require me to attack the boss at all. By this point in the game, I had progressed Lightening pretty far in the healing paradigm so I had her, Hope and Vanille. Then I only had three paradigms set up. 1) Med/Med/Med 2) Med/Syn/Med and 3) Med/Med/Sab. The reason? This boss is susceptible to poison. Each poison will take out 25% if it's HP reasonable fast. It may take several casts to get it to stick, but this way, I was always at 90% hp or better and the boss still went down. So, start in 1 as he will use merciless judgment right off the bat. Switch to 2 long enough for hope to cast haste then 3 to poison the boss then back to two to sit back, buff up, and watch his HP drop. Of course, setup 1 after merciless judgement and then to 3 when poison wears off then go back to two and munch on some popcorn.
It is worth mentioning you ought to set up a couple of attack paradigms for phase II of the boss battle since there you will want to hit hard and fast.
it was sort of a laugh, took me about 15 minutes:S
Well fight 1 is just laughable, just used vanille, hope and lightning, play as vanille and just poisson him first and after just keep debuffing and when he staggers go to tri disaster for another nuke of dammage. For fight 2 use syn/med/med and tri disaster and you will defeat hin too woth ease.
Yup jamie that is exactly what i did to because the poision did not go away i was snow with sazh and vanille and right before vanille died for good i ran our of doens because of my weak 6000 hp i just stayed in santinile and kept on makeing orphan attack me while sazh bufferd me up and it worked one minute he was at 3mil the next i mil i was lmao the whole time it was happing
Worst thing Square has done: Let a final boss one-hit KO your entire party whenever they want. Terrible.
Your guide, however, is very good. Thanks.
Now if only you can get us around the one-hit KO...
Thank you SO MUCH for this. Got the last form down to 4 digits before getting OHKO (I KNOW RIGHT!?)
Used this, beat him before the first stagger had even ended haha! 5 starred on the first go (like hell was I doing that again for a trophy until my anger at it passed!)
THANK YOU!
is everyone forgeting that u cant do anything while orphan (1st) is useing merciless jugment, and that move can kill u. ive been killed many times by it.
Beat it with light, hope and fang, just kept switching through paradigms, but I reached maximum upgrades in the tesseracts with 999 999 cp before even leaving the tesseracts, only the right thong to do
If i reach orphan can I still go back to Gran Pulse?
It took many days for me to notice that he has two forms... (1st) Well at last I did it. I completed 2nd Orphan in 3 min 19 sec. :) Pretty proud of it. I wasn't pro player at all, and this was my first FF.
FF XIII II... I'm waiting.
Oh and I really hoped that I could continue playing after ending credits... I guess that is impossible?
Battle one was a joke - battle 2 I must be failing a gear check of some sort because the leader just dies for no reason every time. This thing about killing the boss with 3 staggers isn't happening for me either. I suspect I'll need about 9 staggers but obviously not happening..
kraemder, buy 3 Cherub's crowns (or 2 Seraph's crowns if you have) and 2-3 for others on team. Upgrade them with perfect conductors (for example). The reason for their dying is enemy's autodeath. He casts it randomly after half of the battle (and 25 mins if you're slow) Those accessories resists death 30%-45% (Cherub's) and 40%-60% (Seraph's)¨
btw don't worry if you don't have enough money for 3, i survived with just 2 Cherub's crowns on my leader. Other team had 1 both. Anybody died.
Thanks for the tips! I beat orphan with Ligth/Vanille/Hope 1st form! Poison is The key! Second form killed it in 1 stagger and got the superstar trophy
OH MA GOD i just finished it using lightning fang and vanille, took me 2 tries but I GOT IT DUEL SABATUER FTW!
Hes right there on the tips with buffs alot them i mean constantly thats if ya charcs ernt maxed! thats how i done it by having my guys maxed to the brim did't die once though got lucky some of the time aswell........ but theres a achivement you can get but you have to beat orphan with 5 star rating!!!!!!!!
And the grinding starts....
Ehh Took two tries thanks to instant death but I used Fang/Lightning/Hope and it was fairly easy, Combat Clinic to recover from merciless judgement evened odds to buff and debuff and diversity to attack. Did use Relentless assault against Orphans second form. Hp was all under 6.5k.
Also Consumate Light heals Orphan, not Darkness like this guide says, Darkness deals damage + fog. Veil is more important that pro/shell/haste.
I beat him my first try. I used snow, vanille, and hope. Snow with 9.8k hp, hope 6kyou and vanille 6.3k. Basicallystarting paradigm should be (in order: snow/hope/vanille) sen/sab/syn. Good buffing n debuffing. Switch to combat medic, sen/med/med when you need healing and use relentless assault to get her stagger high. On the final battle since she took no dmg.unless staggered I used all ravagers and then switched to relentless assault once staggered. Like I said I beat all the fights my first try with no ethersols or fortisols and without any upgraded equipment what so ever. You shouldn't have any troubles with this build if you have the same hp as I do.
Oh my gosh. I'm scared to fight him. I don't feel like touching the last boss yet. I never fought him but you people scare me. I usually don't have a problem with any bosses but people keep telling me "It's so dang hard and you cannot do it! He kills!" and I'm like "The hell wrong with you?!". I hate those times... But i'm pretty sure after reading ALL -*I said ALL*- the comments so far, I should be fine now but first, I'm going to unlock the Chocobo's for fun ;3
SmileyC: thanks for the help! I am fully leveled up on all of my characters. I have all of the Crystatarium done. I just finished beating The third Bartandelus and didnt realize that it went straight into battling Orphan which kind of mad me mad. lol. I was NOT prepared for that AT ALL. I have like 9 potions, 14 pheonix downs and no TB gauges left. lol. so I was basically S.O.L. lol. I couldn't find a decent strategy for anything. I've tried about 6 that I have found. None worked. Im going to try yours. It sounds useful.
Thanks again! I'll let you know how well I do. lol.
The easiest way to kill orphan is my using fang, vannile and hope sab, sab, syn com, rav, rav, med med med youll beat barthendulus in no time and orphan first form in his second stagger and orphans second form on your first stagger make sure your characters hp are around 6000 and have your weapons fully upgraded to there second tier form if you use this strategy killing orphan will be a piece of cake
I forgot to mention that orphan first form has two sides a light side and a dark side be carefull of his dark side because his attacks are much more powerfull if he does change forms use your eidolon so you can survive long enouph until he uses merciles judgement to go back to his light side and from there you can just beat orphan and when you start the battle orphan uses merciles judgement on you strait away so make sure you have a healing paradigm right away
So I know I'm late in the getting to the boss, but I didn't need high HP to do it. Used my two lowest HP and my highest. Snow as Commando most of the time except for when him and Hope tag teamed in Ravanger. Hope on Synergist for the vast duration of the fight and Vanille in nothing but the Medic role. My health only went down on the Merciless Judgement attack and was barely tickled by the Progenetorial Wrath. Health rarely saw yellow and buffs were always up. Easy fight! :D
How do you fight orphan again post story after youve maxed out crystarium? I warp back to orphans cradle but im unable to re enter the terrasets :( can someone help?
That was the easiest boss I ever fought. Orphan was not as I expected it to be. So were the 2 others. I never died on my first try! :D
Seriously I don't get it, I see people writing entire essays about how to beat this guy but I don't see what's so difficult about it. I beat both forms on my first go, s/he wasn't nearly as tough as any of the eidolons or minor bosses you get to face in the game. I have maxed all basic roles in the crystarium (stage 9) and that's about it. I haven't upgraded any single weapon or accessory throughout the game.
The strategy I follow is simple: Lightning, Sazh, Vanille. This trio can beat any enemy in the game, it has never failed me. The secret is buffing and debuffing, first on your team (Sazh) and then on your enemy. Keep your team buffed up at all times and debuff the enemy on every occasion and no-one will be a match. It's really that simple.
Smashed him in one stagger, my team was lightning sazh fang
Only needed 3 paradigms
Evened odds (med/syn/sab)
Relentless assault (rav/rav/com) &
Cerberus (com/com/com)
I debuffed and buffed with evened odds then smashed up the chain gauge with relentless then when i hit 900% i smashed hime with cerberus i used ultima weapon (lvl20) for lightning deneb duellers (star) for sazh and bladed lance (star) for fang
Each had a starred cherubs crown and various different bangles to boost their hp,,, i had done a bit of cp farming but hadnt quite maxed their crysteriums but wasnt that far off it
I suggest getting to your top level 4 on each of the 3 main CP upgrades and it is much easier to beat this boss. I had Light, Vanille, and the Little boy and this is what I did. SYN/SYN/SYN. SAB/SAB/SYN. Then relentless assault and I staggered him and brought him down in one stagger. NEATO!

OH MY GOD! HE IS DIFFFICULT. And now i want to go back and farm some CP, but then i have to go through barthandulus... If God loves me, he'll help me....
