Christmas Costumes: Santa Claus

Santa Claus, Saint Nicholas, Father Christmas, Kris Kringle, Santa, Sinterklaas – whatever you call him he’s the legendary figure who brings Christmas presents to the homes of the good children during the Christmas Season. While originally portrayed being dressed like a bishop, he is now depicted as a plump, jolly, white bearded man with a red cloak with white collars and cuffs. He generally has red pants with a black belt.

With Christmas just around the corner it’s time for Dad’s around the country to get ready to dress up as Santa and surprise the kids at Christmas.

Here are the things you will need:

• Unless you’re lucky enough to have a very long white bushy beard, you’re going to need a fake Santa beard and moustache
• Maybe you have kept your disco suit from the 70s, but if not you’re going to need a pair of red pants, a red jacket and a black belt.
• Not many men have black boots trimmed in white fur, so you’ll need to buy some of those.
• Now some men already have glasses, but you really need ‘professor’ type glasses.
• Finally, you have to have something to carry all those wonderful toys for the children – so you’ll need to buy a nice red sack too.
• Oh, and for those of you who don’t already have a large belly, you’re going to get a fake one to look authentic!

Don’t worry though, all your hard work will pay off – you’ll be rewarded with some nice cookies and milk, and maybe the odd carrot or two! You’ll also be able to see the joy on your children’s faces when they spot Santa!
