Best Science fiction on TV

I have to say that I admit to being a Science Fiction lover; I just can’t get enough of the new and the old, and have watched most of the major science fictions stories. What amazes me most is that even those these series are still very popular you can get the whole series for most of these classic sci-fi series at a very reasonable or low price.

For example, Stargate SG1, the ten series collection feature over 250 episodes can be brought from Amazon.com for only $80 – that’s 32c an episode – not only will you have months of entertainment but you will also have a nice collection of DVDs to show off to your friends.

Most of the top science fiction series are available on DVD and if you time it right you can find bargains, especially when new movies or series come out.

Babylon 5: The Complete Seasons 1-5
Amazon Price: $117.99
List Price: $300.98
Star Trek The Original Series - The Complete Seasons 1-3

Classic Science Fiction series

Babylon 5

This is one of my favorite sci-fi series of all time – it had several underlying plots and some amazing characters that stayed with you for the entire 5 series – it was innovative, and while many could say it was similar to Star Trek: DS9, it really had a deeper plot and some fascinating characters that made it stand out alone. The final series was perhaps the weakest, but still entertaining, but over all this whole set is excellent.

Star Trek: Original series

Despite struggling for an audience when it was first shown on TV, this ground breaking show that broke down so many barriers is still one of the best science fiction series of all time – with Captain Kirk at the helm of the Enterprise, and the interaction of him with Bones and Spock, the characters are what made this show so good! While there were only three series, there are so many controversial subjects contained in the series that you’ll find this entertaining for many years to come.

Star Trek: The Next Generation

With the success of Star Trek, and the franchise beginning to build, Star Trek: The Next Generation was introduced. Initially, the acting was poor and the sets weren’t that much better, but over time the characters grew, the quality improved and the overall product became a very well polished one – with hundreds of episodes over the years this is a timeless series that will be a great part of any science fiction fan’s collection – with 49 discs and over 130 hours to watch, you’ll have plenty to do for the next few months!

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

This is perhaps my favorite Star Trek series; based on a space station in deep space, and with an array of characters from all parts of the universe, this show had a stronger plot line that most Star Trek series. This combined with some decent actors and great writing made this a very compelling series with perhaps the most rounded set of characters of all the Star Trek franchise.

Star Trek: The Movies

Well if you are buying series, you may as well go for the ultimate Star Trek movie collection – with some great movies included, this 10 movie package is a great collector’s set and while there may be the odd bad movie in here, a true Star Trek fan will not care. These movies are mostly re-watchable – I’ve watched every one of them several times and have thoroughly enjoyed the quality casts and for the most part excellent plots that make them appealing to most science fiction fans.

Star Trek: Enterprise

This is probably the least successful of the Star Trek franchise, but for me was actually a very intriguing series- based prior to the original series as we see the Enterprise launch for its maiden voyage, the writers tried to incorporate a lot of paradoxical time travel; this was cleverly done in my opinion, but this may just have been one Star Trek too many – the inclusion of Scott Bakula helped, but many could not overcome his previous role in Quantam Leap.

Star Trek: Voyager

This was another great concept for a Star Trek franchise and for a while it did very well, introducing some very loveable characters and creating an underlying plot – the plot simply being that Voyager has somehow got moved way out into an unknown part of space and must try and get back to normal space. Overall this was probably the best acting in all of the Star Trek franchises and was the only franchise to feature a female captain.

Stargate SG1

This series spanned 10 seasons with over 200 episodes; throughout the whole production there were several underlying plots, while most episodes could still be viewed as separate episodes in their own right. Based on the highly successful movie, this blended classic science fiction with Egyptian mythology (and many other mythologies) to produce one of the most thought provoking series of them all – with its success came two highly successful spin off series and several movies that continued the story after series 10. I brought this collection in April this year and just finished the final episode a few weeks ago – at $80 this is a must-buy for any science fiction fan!

Stargate Atlantis

This was a spin-off series from Stargate SG1 and perhaps one of the most innovative and highly technological series of all the science fiction series I have seen. With great acting, some superb action sequences and an intriguing underlying plot, this has become one of my recent favorites and it’s sure to stand the test of time.

Battlestar Galactica (New Series)

While I like the original series which had its own 70s quality that was prevalent at the time, the new series was far more satisfying. Based on the original series, it became a very dark and intriguing series that had so many inter-twined plots and twists that it was often very difficult to keep track of them – it’s one series where I really felt a little sad when it ended and although there is a spin-off series, it’s going to be really difficult to re-capture the feeling of desperation and fear often ‘lived’ by the characters in this series – it’s a great series and one that all true sci-fi fans must own.

Great Hub and definitely a great run of series there. Pleased (or should that be guilty) to say that I've watched and enjoyed every single one of them. What did you think about Farscape - thats another one that was on at around the same time & I also notice you've not included X-Files?
